Deconstructing Death in Contemporary Society: Experiencing Death and Grieving During Covid-19 Pandemi

Abstract:

How are we experiencing death and mourning during the Covid-19 pandemic? The unprecedented pandemic situation suddenly revealed vivid contours of dying in contemporary society and our interpreta-tions of death per se. This master thesis is an ethnographic inquiry of how specific social sites such as medicine, palliative care, the funeral industry, and religion, construct the experience of death. The study is closely examining the cultural production of meaning on local levels and contextualizing the findings in a bigger theoretic frame. The result is a mosaic of ways, how chosen social fields design death in a specific context such as pandemic and exposing the relations between them.

Abstract:

Ako prežívame smrť a trúchlenie počas pandémie ochorenia covid-19? Bezprecedentná pandemická situácia v súčasnej spoločnosti zrazu smrť spredmetnila a ukázala jasné kontúry súčasných interpretácií. Táto diplomová práca je etnografickou štúdiou spôsobov akým je smrť prežívaná v medicíne, paliatívnej starostlivosti, pohrebníctve a náboženstve. Práca sleduje produkciu kultúrneho významu na lokál-nych úrovniach a poznatky následne zasadzuje do širšieho teoretické-ho rámca. Výsledná mozaika ukazuje spôsob ako vybrané sociálne po-lia koncipujú smrť v špecifickom kontexte pandémie a aké vzťahy me-dzi nimi existujú.
