Historical Auxiliary Sciences as Important Tools for the Translation

Abstract:

This thesis is to point out ? based on texts dealing with historical topics ? how important it is for a translator to be able to make his own inquiries about questions of historical research. Furthermore, it is useful for him to have a proper grasp of complementary historical subjects in order to work out an adequate translation. The selected texts, published by the local historian Kurt Hermann in the periodical ?Alte Heimat Kuhländchen? (information magazine of the community of the former German inhabitants of the area called ?Cow Region?), do not only serve as examples of historical publications but are also meant to widen the readers? knowledege of the history of the village of Brosdorf (now Bravantice).

Abstract:

Diese Arbeit möchte am Beispiel publizierter Texte mit historischer Thematik zeigen, wie wichtig die Recherchierkompetenz des Übersetzers ist und wie förderlich Grundkenntnisse aus dem Bereich der Historischen Hilfswissenschaften für eine richtige Übersetzung sein können. Die ausgewählten Texte des Heimatforschers Kurt Hermann aus der Zeitschrift ?Alte Heimat, Kuhländchen? des Vereins heimattreurer Kuhländler e. V. sollen nicht nur als Beispiel, sondern auch zur Erweiterung des Bewusstseins über die Geschichte des Ortes Brosdorf (heute Bravantice) dienen.
