Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce pojednává o identitě a jinakosti v románech Dionne Brandové In Another Place, Not Here a What We All Long For. První kapitola uvádí historický kontext imigrační a multikulturní politiky v Kanadě a popisuje vývoj kanadské společnosti. Druhá kapitola definuje pojmy identita a jinakost, vysvětluje kanadskou národní identitu a identitu přistěhovalců. Literární analýza pojednává o černošské a vietnamské diaspoře. Cílem práce je vylíčit, že v románech Dionne Brandové multikulturalismus v Kanadě nepodporuje přijímání přistěhovalců do většinové společnosti.

Abstract:

This Master thesis discusses the identity and otherness in the novels In Another Place, Not Here and What We All Long For by Dionne Brand. The first chapter provides the historical context of immigration and multiculturalism policies in Canada to describe the evolution of Canadian society. The second chapter defines the concepts of identity and otherness, it explains the Canadian national identity and immigrant identity. The literary analysis discusses the Black and Vietnamese diaspora. The thesis aims to portray that in the novels of Dionne Brand multiculturalism in Canada does not foster acceptance of immigrants into mainstream society.
