Presence of Brucella spp. in selected groups of free-living vertebrates and haematophagous vectors

Abstract:

Brucelóza je zoonóza způsobená gramnegativními bakteriemi rodu Brucella spp., které postihují domácí i volně žijící obratlovce. Navzdory zlepšeným preventivním opatřením zůstává brucelóza v mnoha regionech světa významným problémem. Cílem práce bylo provést široký molekulární skríning vybraných zástupců volně žijících obratlovců a hematofágních vektorů na přítomnost této bakterie. Celkem bylo zanalyzováno 1108 vzorků zahrnující vzorky hlodavců, nutrií, netopýrů, klíšťat, komárů, štěnic a muchniček. Na přítomnost Brucella spp. bylo celkem zjištěno 19 pozitivních vzorků. Nejvyšší výskyt byl zaznamenán u hlodavců, kde bylo pozitivních 10 vzorků. U nutrií bylo detekováno 5 pozitivních vzorků, u směsí klíšťat 3 pozitivní vzorky a u štěnic pouze 1 pozitivní vzorek. Všechny vzorky netopýrů, komárů a muchniček byly na přítomnost Brucella spp. negativní. Navíc bylo otestováno 245 vzorků hlodavců na přítomnost B. microti. Ani v jednom vzorku však B. microti nebyla detekována. Výsledky této práce poukazují na nutnost dalšího sledování výskytu této bakterie v přírodě.

Abstract:

Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease caused by gram-negative bacteria of the genus Brucella spp., affecting both domestic and wild vertebrates. Despite improved preventive measures, brucellosis remains a significant problem in many regions of the world. The aim of this study was to conduct a broad molecular screening of selected representatives of free-living vertebrates and hematophagous vectors for the presence of this bacterium. A total of 1108 samples were analysed, including samples from rodents, nutria, bats, ticks, mosquitoes, bat bugs, and black flies. A total of 19 positive samples for Brucella spp. were detected. The highest prevalence was found in rodents, with 10 positive samples. In nutria, 5 positive samples were detected, while 3 positive samples were found in tick mixtures and only 1 positive sample in bat bugs. All samples from bats, mosquitoes, and black flies were tested negative for the presence of Brucella spp. In addition, 245 rodent samples were tested for the presence of B. microti. However, B. microti was not detected in any sample. The results of this study underscore the need for further monitoring of the occurrence of this bacterium in nature.
