Evaluation of online news credibility: the effect of need for cognition and perceived mainstream news credibility

Abstract:

Cílem práce je prozkoumat vztah mezi potřebou poznávání (NC), kredibilitou mainstreamových médií (KM) a hodnocením kredibility zpráv na internetu. Tento vztah zkoumá na populaci adolescentů, která je ve výzkumu kredibility málo zastoupena. Studie pracuje s rozdělením médií na mainstreamová a alternativní. Hypotézou bylo, že vliv potřeby poznávání a posuzované kredibility mainstreamových médií na hodnocení kredibility sdělení se bude lišit na základě zdroje tohoto sdělení. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 66 studentů gymnázia ze dvou škol ve věku 15-18 let, z toho 35 žen a 31 mužů. Tito respondenti si přečetli připravený text, jehož kredibilitu následně hodnotili. Také byla měřena jejich míra potřeby poznávání a jejich posouzení kredibility mainstreamových médií. Bylo manipulováno se zdrojem sdělení, které bylo zarámované buď jako článek z mainstreamového nebo alternativního zpravodajského serveru. Hypotézy byly testovány vícenásobnou lineární regresí. Interakce NC a zdroje a KM a zdroje nebyly signifikantní. Hypotézy tedy nebyly podpořeny. Byl ale nalezen vliv hlavních efektů NC a KM na kredibilitu sdělení. Vyšší NC vedlo k nižšímu hodnocení kredibility sdělení a vyšší KM k vyššímu hodnocení kredibility sdělení.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between need for cognition (NC), mainstream media credibility (KM) and evaluation of online news credibility. This relationship was examined in adolescents, who have been underrepresented in credibility research. For purposes of this study the media has been divided into two categories: mainstream and alternative. It was hypothesized that the effect of need for cognition and perceived mainstream media credibility on evaluation of message credibility would differ based on the source of the message. The sample consisted of 66 high school students between the age of 15 and 18, of which 35 were women and 31 were men. These participants read a prepared article and rated it’s credibility. Their need for cognition and perceived mainstream media credibility was also measured. The source of the message was manipulated: the article was framed as originating from either a mainstream media source or an alternative one. The hypotheses were tested using multiple linear regression. The interaction between NC and source and KM and source were not statistically significant. The hypotheses were therefore not supported. However, a significant main effect of both NC and KM was found. Higher NC led to lower message credibility evaluation and higher KM to higher message credibility evaluation.
