The impact and role of investor sentiment in emerging markets

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je zhodnotiť vzťah medzi sentimentom a výnosmi na trhoch rozvíjajúcich sa krajín. Práca obsahuje náhľad to problematiky konceptu rozvíjajúcich sa krajín a sentimentu, spoločne so súvisiacou literatúrou na tému vzťahu sentimentu a výnosov v prostredí rozvíjajúcich sa krajín. Za účelom hlbšieho bádania som využil VARX modely a funkcie impulzívnej odozvy. Po prvé som zistil, že v daných špecifických podmienkach sú priame metódy merania sentimentu lepšie ako nepriame a kombinované metódy. Po druhé, získal som dôkazy podporujúce tvrdenie, že kauzálny vzťah medzi sentimentom a výnosmi je často obojsmerný. Nakoniec som objasnil, že špecifiká tohoto vzťahu sa líšia medzi krajinami bez ohľadu na geografické podmienky alebo kritériá rozvinutosti. Táto práca nielenže ďalej prispieva k poznaniu, ale ho aj ďalej rozširuje využitím celotrhového prístupu k tejto problematike, v kombinácií s využitím rôznych metód merania sentimentu.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis is to assess the relationship of sentiment and returns in the emerging markets countries. The thesis offers an insight into concept of emerging markets and sentiment, along with related literature on the topic of sentiment relationship with returns in emerging markets environment. I implemented VARX models and impulse response functions to further investigate this relationship. Firstly, I have discovered, that under specified conditions, direct sentiment measurements are superior to indirect and combined ones. Secondly, I found evidence to support claim, that causal relationship between sentiment and returns is often bi-directional. Finally, the specifics of this relationship varies between countries regardless of geographic conditions or development criteria. This thesis not only further contributes to knowledge in this domain, but also broadens it by offering market-wide approach to this problematic in combination with various sentiment measurements.
