Thematic mapping of railway topological plans

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá možnostmi vizualizace vybraných atributů v mapovém modelu Topologická schémata kolejí, který je spravován Technickou ústřednou dopravní cesty. Práce byla realizována ve spolupráci s vnitřní organizační jednotkou Správy železniční dopravní cesty z toho důvodu, že rozšíření Topologických schémat kolejí o tematickou složku doposud provedeno nebylo. Cílem práce bylo zjistit uživatelské požadavky a na jejich podkladě navrhnout vhodnou kartografickou vizualizaci vybraných atributů segmentu železniční sítě. Dílčí cíl představovalo propojení mapového modelu s vlastnostmi z pasportní databáze. Návrhy výsledných mapových kompozic tak vychází z rešeršní části práce o pasportních systémech, dynamické segmentaci, tematické metodě liniových znaků a bivariační vizualizaci. Součástí práce je i analýza mapových produktů Technické ústředny dopravní cesty. Hlavním výstupem práce bylo šest návrhů zobrazujících vlastnosti stáří a řád železnic různými grafickými proměnnými a jejich kombinacemi. Návrhy byly postoupeny zadavateli ke zpětné vazbě. Jako vhodné se ukázaly dvě z předložených bivariačních vizualizací. První vyjadřuje řád koleje tloušťkou linie a stáří železnic sytostí barvy. Druhá vyjadřuje řád koleje rovněž tloušťkou linie, nicméně stáří železnic je převedeno na kvalitativní data a rozlišeno intuitivními tóny barvy světel signalizačního zařízení. V reakci na zpětnou vazbu zadavatele byl nakonec doplněn finální návrh bivariační kartografické reprezentace z hlediska koncepce, který spojuje obě vlastnosti dohromady a vizualizuje je jako jednu.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis deals with the possibilities of visualisation of given attributes in a map model called Topologická schémata kolejí (Topological Plans of Rails) which is maintained by Technická ústředna dopravní cesty (Technical Headquarters of Transportation Path). The thesis was carried out in cooperation with an internal administrative unit of Správa železniční dopravní cesty (Administration of Railway’s Transportation Path) due to an absence of thematic component in Topologická schémata kolejí. The main aim of the thesis was to find out what the user requirements in this matter were and, on their basis, to propose suitable cartographical visualisation of selected attributes of a segment of the railway network. The partial aim constituted connection of the map model and passport database of attributes. The drafts of the resultant map compositions are based on theory background focusing on passport systems, dynamic segmentation, thematic method of line features and bivariate mapping. In Besides, an analysis of the map products of Technická ústředna dopravní cesty was conducted. Main output was represented by six proposed visualizations displaying following attributes: age of the railway and their rank, using various graphic variables and their combinations. The proposed cartographic representations were handed over to the submitter for feedback. Two of the introduced bivariate visualisations turned out to be suitable. First of them shows rank of the rail with the width of the line and the age of railway with colour value. The second one displays the rank of the rail the same way, yet the age of the railway was transformed to qualitative data and expressed by intuitive colour hues inspired by traffic lights. As a reply to the feedback, final conceptual bivariate representation was designed. It means that both of its attributes were merged and visualised as one.
