Brno as a growth machine: the case of 'Jižní centrum' (Southern centre)

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je případovou studií aktuální situace přesunu brněnského nádraží v kontextu urbánně-sociologického konceptu growth machine. Autoři konceptu Logan a Molotch (1987) prostřednictvích něj kriticky reflektují rozvoj amerických měst 70. let a poukazují na procesy, na základě kterých k rozvoji měst docházelo. V centru konceptu stojí tzv. růstová koalice soukromých subjektů realizujícím rozvojem měst vlastní zisk a místních vlád, které se snaží o zabezpečení lepších podmínek pro život města. Práce vychází z analýzy dostupných mediálních výstupů a rozhovorů s aktivními odpůrci přesunu nádraží. Jejím cílem je na základě rekonstrukce událostí spojených s přestavbou brněnského železničního uzlu a výpovědí vybraných „aktivistů“ zhodnotit, zdali je v případě případu odsunu brněnského nádraží možné hovořit o growth machine a jaké jsou možnosti aplikace konceptu do českého prostředí.

Abstract:

This master thesis presents a case study of current situation of Brno train station displacement. It is built in the context of urban-sociological concept of growth machine. The authors of the concept Logan and Molotch (1987) through it critically reflect American urban development in the 1970-ties. They point to the processes upon which the urban development evolved. So called 'growth coalition' of private actors and local governments is in a center of this concept. Private actors make profit by developing the cities, while local governments are trying to ensure better conditions for the life of the city. The thesis builds on the analysis of accessible media releases and interviews with active opponents of the train station displacement. The goal of the thesis is to evaluate the possibility of application of growth machine concept on Brno railway station reconstruction and in the Czech environment based the reconstruction of the events connected with the rail junction remodeling and statements of selected „activists“.
