Abstract:

Práce se zabývá artikulačním posunem nejfrekventovanější anglické hlásky zvané šva (schwa) v sociolektu Received Pronunciation. Podkladem pro praktickou část je teoretická část práce týkající se původu termínu a odpovídajícího fonetického symbolu, artikulačních a akustických vlastností samohlásek a jejich posunů v historii angličtiny. Experimentální část práce tvoří akustická analýza dvou vánočních projevů královny Alžběty II., a to z počátku její vlády a z minulého roku. Tyto projevy od sebe dělí téměř 60 let. Měřením frekvencí byl zjištěn nesymetrický posun dlouhé a krátké varianty zkoumané hlásky. V závěru jsou diskutovány možné důvody zjištěného artikulačního posunu.

Abstract:

The presented thesis focuses on the articulatory and acoustic characteristics of schwa in Received Pronunciation. The preparatory part includes a research into origin of both the term schwa and the symbol of the same name in English, fundaments of vowel phonetics and vowel shifts. For the acoustic analysis of the schwa vowel, two Queen’s Christmas messages spanning over almost 60 years were chosen. In the measured data, shifts in both long and short schwas were found, but in different directions. Long schwa tends to be lowered while short schwa shows higher tendency to backing. Several possible reasons for such shifts are discussed.
