Digitalization process and accessing of the map collection of the Institute of Geography of the Masaryk University

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá digitalizací mapové sbírky Geografického ústavu a jejím následným zpřístupněním uživatelům na internetu. První část teoreticky zkoumá možnosti digitalizace map, vhodné postupy a metody uložení, formáty a parametry výsledného obrazu či jejich popis metadaty. Pozornost je také věnována možnostem prezentace map na internetu. Druhá část obsahuje návrh konkrétních postupů digitalizace s ohledem na charakter starých map a návrh metody zpřístupnění digitalizovaných dokumentů uživateli.

Abstract:

This study deals with problematics of digitizing the Institute of Geography of the Masaryk University map collection and making these available to internet users. The first part is theoretical and focuses on various aspects of digitizing the maps, putting emphasis on suitable processes and methods of saving, formats and other variables of the final documents, including the metadata descriptions of these. Various possibilities of internet presentation of maps are discussed as well. Second part of this study suggests factual processes of map digitizing, taking the characteristics of old maps into consideration. It also proposes a particular method of internet presentation of such documents.
