The origins of the gender pay gap among skilled young workers in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Jeden nebo dva roky po promoci, rozdíl průměru mzdy mužů a žen (GPG) mezi absolventy činí 15%. Muži a ženy s dětmi mají rozdíl mezd 19%. Zhruba 40% GPG mezi všemi absolventy a polovina GPG mezi mladými otci a matkami vysvětlují odlišné volby studijních oborů a kategorií zaměstnání. Ženy které plánují v dohledné době mít děti vydělávají méně než ženy, které v dohledné době děti neplánují. Rozdíl je vysvětlen charakteristikami zaměstnání; ženy plánující mít děti kompenzuji tím, že pracují méně hodin.

Abstract:

One or two years after graduation, young graduates already exhibit a gender pay gap of 15%. Male and female graduates with children exhibit a wider pay gap of 19%. About 40% of the gender pay gap between young university graduates and a half of the pay gap between male and female graduates is attributable toself-selection of men and women into different majors of study and occupational groups. The women who plan to have children in the foreseeable future earn lower wages than those who do not. The gap is attributable to differences in work characteristics; women who plan children compensate by working fewer hours.
