Changing Perception of Female Sexuality in American Society: Revolt against Victorian Values

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá sociálně vykonstruovaným konceptem ženské sexuality, a to především z pohledu viktoriánské společnosti devatenáctého století. Práce dokazuje, že postavení žen v patriarchální společnosti úzce souviselo s jejich sexualitou, na kterou se pohled během několika let zásadně změnil. V první části se bakalářská práce věnuje tzv. viktoriánskému morálnímu kodexu a jeho dopadu na postavení žen v rámci společnosti. Popsán je systém nerovnoprávnosti v nastavení společnosti, taktéž jsou zmíněny klíčové aspekty viktoriánské morálky, které stavěly ženu do značně nevýhodného a podřadného postavení. Druhá část pak definuje změny, které napomohly prolomit zavedené stereotypy týkající se ženské sexuality, čímž přispěly k liberalizaci a emancipaci žen. Cílem mé práce je poukázat na důležitost konceptu ženské sexuality, a jeho znovu definování. Práce také poukazuje na to, že změny ve smýšlení americké společnosti, ačkoliv pozvolné, předznamenaly novou éru v historii chápání ženství a zasadily základy pro formování nových postojů ve vnímání ženské sexuality

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the socially constructed concept of female sexuality in the nineteenth-century Victorian society. This work proves that social status of women in the patriarchal society was closely related to their sexuality, and it is also argued that the Victorian view on female sexuality was fundamentally changing in the course of several decades. The first part of the thesis focuses on the so-called Victorian moral code and on its impact on women’s role within society. A political system of inequality is described; and also key aspects of Victorian morality – which put women at a disadvantage – are discussed. The second part of the thesis defines the changes that helped to break the established stereotypes regarding female sexuality, thereby contributed to liberalization and emancipation of women. The aim of my work is to highlight the importance of the concept of female sexuality, and its re-definition. The thesis also points out that the changes in mentality of American society were gradual, but heralded a new era in the understanding of femininity and womanhood, and laid the foundations for the formation of new attitudes related to female sexuality.
