Daughters of Darkness: A Comparative Study of Women's Representation in Vampire Literature

Abstract:

Tato práce porovnává literární postavy pěti upírek a pozoruje měnící se přístup k těmto postavám, napsaným pro čtenáře 19., 20. a 21. století. V krátké teoretické části je poskytnut nutný úvod do slovní zásoby specifické pro upíří tematiku, stejně tak jako schopnosti vybraných postav. V analytické části jsou pak postavy řádně analyzovány a navzájem porovnány. Samotná analýza je rozdělena do tří kapitol, přičemž každá z nich se soustředí na jedno literární dílo - gotickou novelu Sheridana Le Fanu, feministickou krátkou povídku Angely Carter a moderní převyprávění od S.T.Gibson.

Abstract:

This thesis compares five literary female vampire characters, and observes the differing depiction of these characters as written for the readerships of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. In the short theoretical part this thesis provides a necessary introduction into the vampire-specific language as well as the creature’s inner workings. In the analytical part, these characters are thoroughly explored and compared. The analysis is divided into three chapters, each focusing on a single literary work - a Gothic novel by Sheridan Le Fanu, a feminist short story by Angela Carter, and a contemporary retelling by S.T.Gibson.
