What happens in the vestibule of Hachette dictionary throughout the years?

Abstract:

The objective of this bachelor thesis is a comparative analysis of the neological section in different editions of the French dictionary called Dictionnaire Hachette (DH). Every year, new words are presented in the so-called “vestibule” (antichambre), which thanks to a wider diffusion in society are either added to the body of the dictionary, or disappear without a trace. The theoretical part briefly mentions the history of the dictionary as well as the development of its re-editions, closely defines basic metalexicographical terms and describes lexicographer’s working procedure while selecting potential candidates for dictionarisation. The material starting point for the analysis were dictionaries DH 2010 (published in 2009), then DH 2012, DH 2020, DH 2022 (due to marketing reasons, they are always issued six months before the actual year stated in the title). The methodological part of the thesis describes the process of corpus creation and evaluation criteria, including the creation of our questionnaire. Following with the practical part, which is divided into two parts and aims to verify the validity of established hypotheses. A comparative analysis of words in the “vestibule” of examined DH editions issued ten years apart (2010/2020 and 2012/2022) disproved the assumption that more than a quarter of these words would still be in this part of the dictionary even after a decade. On the contrary, it has been confirmed that more than a quarter of lexemes remains still in the “vestibule” in editions of DH issued only two years apart. The second hypothesis confirmed that only a small number of selected lexemes from the “vestibule”, according to the type of occurrence in the four examined editions of DH, can also be found in other dictionaries such as Le Petit Robert 2022 and Le Petit Larousse 2022. Thanks to the results of our survey answered by fifty-nine francophone respondents, it was subsequently verified that most of the lexemes which still appear in the “vestibule” even after twelve years are not widespread words in society and therefore are not suitable candidates for dictionarisation.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je komparativní analýza neologické sekce v různých edicích francouzského slovníku Dictionnaire Hachette (zkráceně DH). V takzvané „předsíni“ (antichambre) jsou každoročně prezentována nová hesla, která se do celospolečenského úzu s širší difúzí buď do hlavní části slovníku zařadí, nebo zmizí beze stopy. Teoretická část práce stručně charakterizuje vznik slovníku a vývoj jeho reedic, blíže definuje základní metalexikografické pojmy a také popisuje obecný postup práce lexikografů při vybíraní lexikálních kandidátů pro vstup do nomenklatury. Materiálovým východiskem pro analýzu se staly slovníky DH 2010 (vydaný 2009) a dále DH 2012, DH 2020 a DH 2022 (vydané z marketingových důvodů vždy s půlročním předstihem před uváděným rokem v názvu). Metodologická část práce popisuje proces tvorby korpusu a evaluačních kritérií, včetně tvorby dotazníku. Praktická část práce je rozdělená do dvou částí a má za cíl ověřit platnost stanovených hypotéz. Komparativní analýza lexémů v „předsíních“ edic studovaných slovníků vždy po deseti letech (2010/2020 a 2012/2022) vyvrátila předpoklad, že by se zde více než čtvrtina hesel nacházela celé desetiletí. Naopak se však potvrdilo, že pro edice slovníků DH vydaných v rozmezí dvou let se s více než čtvrtinou hesel v „předsíni“ nehýbá. U druhé hypotézy se potvrdilo, že pouze malý počet vybraných hesel z „předsíni“ slovníků DH podle typu výskytu ve zkoumaných čtyřech edicích se nachází v nomenklatuře dalších referenčních slovníků, konkrétně v Le Petit Robert 2022 a Le Petit Larousse 2022. Pomocí dotazníku na vzorku odpovědí padesáti devíti frankofonních respondentů bylo následně ověřeno, že většina z hesel, které v předsíni DH zůstávala více než dvanáct let nejsou celospolečensky rozšířena a nejsou tak vhodnými kandidáty pro vstup do nomenklatury.
