Larch tree rings as environmental archive of air pollution

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje koncentracím rtuti v letokruzích modřínu opadavého (Larix decidua) ovlivněných zvýšenými koncentracemi rtuti v ovzduší ze Spolchemie v Ústí nad Labem. Práce studuje lokalitu ve vzdálenosti přibližně 3 km od areálu této společnosti. V minulosti byla Spolchemie silným zdrojem emisí rtuti. K rekonstrukci záznamu znečištění rtutí v průběhu let nám mohou sloužit právě letokruhy stromů, jakožto environmentální proxy archivy. Trend koncentrací rtuti v letokruzích modřínů na vybrané lokalitě odpovídal dobovým změnám v koncentracích rtuti v ovzduší. K objasnění těchto trendů sloužily historické průmyslové události v provozu Spolchemie, zahrnující používání rtuti, jako například spuštění amalgámové elektrolýzy a modernizace technologií. Obdobně jako u předchozích studií nebyly zjištěny žádné významné známky ovlivnění koncentrací rtuti v letokruzích modřínů radiální translokací. V práci je zhodnocen i vliv regionálních či globálních emisí rtuti, který se na této lokalitě v blízkosti zdroje znečištění podílel pravděpodobně zcela minimálně. Dle mých poznatků mohou být trendy často ovlivněny působením mnoha různých faktorů (například.: vzdálenost od zdroje znečištění, druh a stáří stromů, fyziologické vlastnosti aj.), které je třeba brát v potaz. Důležité je zhodnotit možné ovlivnění výsledků a přistupovat k nim na různých lokalitách individuálně.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis is devoted to mercury concentrations in tree rings of European Larch (Larix decidua) affected by elevated mercury concentrations in air from Spolchemie in Ústí nad Labem. The work studies a site approximately 3 km from the company's premises. In the past, Spolchemie was a strong source of mercury emissions. Tree rings can be used as environmental proxy archives to reconstruct the record of mercury pollution over the years. The trend of mercury concentrations in the annual tree rings of larch trees at the selected site corresponded to the temporal changes in mercury concentrations in the air. Historical industrial events in the operation of Spolchemie involving mercury use, such as the start-up of amalgam electrolysis and technology upgrades, served to clarify these trends. Similar to previous studies, there was no significant evidence of radial translocation influencing mercury concentrations in larch trees. The paper also evaluated the influence of regional or global mercury emissions, which were likely to have contributed only minimally to the pollution at this site near the source. According to my knowledge, trends can often be influenced by many different factors (e.g.: distance from the pollution source, tree species and age, physiological characteristics, etc.) that need to be taken into account. It is important to assess the possible influences on the results and to approach them on a site-by-site basis.
