This thesis discusses the anti-Catholic thoughts contained in the work of Matthew G. Lewis; The Monk, and their reflection in the deeds and motivation of the main women characters of this book. It suggests that there are various influences such as religion, social status and popularity, which influenced the writer while creating the characters of The Monk. It also analyses to what extent is the book influenced by various religions which played a major role in England at the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. Above all, it compares Catholic and Protestant influences on the main characters and how are they reflected in the story.
