The state formation and origins of urbanism in ancient Egypt

Abstract:

Práce se soustřeďuje na období neolitu až konce Raně dynastického období, kdy dochází ke vzniku a formování státního útvaru na území Egypta, s přesahy do počátků Staré říše, tj. do doby 3. dynastie. Pojednává o jednom z aspektů složitého procesu sjednocování Egypta a přerodu tamní tzv. komplexní společnosti do státního útvaru. Zároveň se věnuje problematice přerodu neolitických osad a sezónních táborů ve vesnice trvalého charakteru, potažmo sídla městského charakteru, tj. počátkům urbanismu. Vzniklý model porovnává se situací na Předním východě, kde se ve stejném období objevuje fenomén ústřední moci a správy vykonávané prostřednictvím vzájemně provázaného systému městských států. Součástí bakalářské práce je databáze lokalit spadajících do daného období, na nichž autorka práce prokáže pomocí daných deskriptorů míru jejich urbanizace.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on determination of the issue of Egyptian urbanisation within the period of time ranging from the Neolithic until the end of the Early Dynastic Period, when the processes of emergence and formation of a state are observed on the Egyptian territory; with an overlap to the beginnings of Old Kingdom, i.e. to the reign of the 3rd Dynasty. It deals with one of the aspects of the complicated process of the unification of Egypt and of the transformation of the local complex society to the state-level society. At the same time, the work deals with the issue of transformation of Neolithic settlements and seasonal camps into the villages of permanent character hence to the settlements of town character. Proposed model is then compared with the development in the Near East, where at the same time the phenomenon of central power and administration exercised by a city-state system appeared. A database of the most important archaeological sites that dated to the studied period of time-formed an integral part of this bachelor thesis. Based on this database, the authoress demonstrates the varying degree of their urbanisation observed through the given descriptors.
