Malcolm X and the Afro-American Self Concept

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o druhé nejvýznamnější osobě mezi černými řečníky v období boje za občanská práva v USA - o Malcolmovi X. I když je toto období spojováno s Martinem Lutherem Kingem, v České republice je jméno Malcolm X neznámé. Jeho význam však není přehlídaný v USA, protože prispěl k vytvoření afro-amerického sebeuvědomění. Jeho postoje, projevy a činy oslovily masy afro-američanů v období, kdy hledali své místo ve společnosti. Tato práce se zabývá důvody, proč tomu tak bylo, jaké byly jeho nejmocnější zbraně v tomhle boji a poukazuje i na fakt, že se k němu lidé stále vracejí. Neopomíná ani odkaz Malcolma X.

Abstract:

This thesis is dealing with the person considered the second most influential figure in the period of the civil right movement – Malcolm X and his impact on the African-Americans in those days. Although this period of time is usually connected with Martin Luther King, Malcolm remains unknown in the Czech Republic. But his importance is not neglected in the United States, because he contributed to the creation of the African-American Self-Concept. His attitude, speeches and actions had the important impact on the black people in the United States, when they were searching their own place in the society in those days. This work is dealing with the reasons why it was so and what was his most powerful weapon to attract so many black people. It shows that people still pay attention to him and points out the legacy of Malcolm.
