European Parliament elections in the Czech Republic: the principles, mechanisms and results in comparison with the elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tématem mé bakalářské práce jsou volby do Evropského parlamentu v České republice. Nejprve se obecně věnuji tématu Evropského parlamentu se zaměřením na historii této instituce a její pravomoci. V dalších částech je rozebírán samotný volební systém. Od obecných charakteristik se přesouvám k analýze výsledků voleb z roku 2004 a 2009, který následně porovnávám s volbami do Poslanecké sněmovny České republiky v letech 2002 a 2006. Z analýz výsledků vycházím při praktickém zkoumání odlišností těchto dvou volebních systémů a hledání odpovědi na otázku, jestli by změna volebního systému při volbách do Evropského parlamentu, ve smyslu zvětšení počtu okrsků, měla zásadní vliv na výsledek a jaký by případně tento vliv byl.

Abstract:

The topic of my thesis is the European elections in the Czech Republic. First part is generally devoted to the topic of the European Parliament, focusing on the history of this institution and its functions. Next section discusses an electoral system. From the general characteristics I move the analysis of the election results in years 2004 and 2009, then compare these results with elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic in years 2002 and 2006. The analysis of the results is the base for the practical examination of differences of these two electoral systems. I am also trying to answer a question whether the changing of electoral system for elections to the European Parliament, in terms of increase in the number of electoral district, would have any profound effect on the outcome and how this could possibly influence the final results of elections.
