Gender as a Factor of the Evaluation of Political Candidates: An Experimental Study

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá gender jako faktor, který má vliv na hodnocení politických kandidátů prostřednictvím experimentální studie. V české politologické obci představuje problematika genderu kandidátů téma, které stojí na okraji zájmů vědců. Tato práce na gender nahlíží prostřednictvím sociálně-kulturní dimenze, přičemž jedním z klíčových teoretických východisek tohoto přístupu je koncept genderových stereotypů, jež zaujímá hlavní teoretický rámec v podobně zaměřených studiích. S konceptem genderových stereotypů úzce souvisí teorie sociálních rolí, která je druhým stěžejním teoretickým východiskem. Online experiment testoval předpoklad, že kandidáti muži a kandidátky ženy budou hodnoceny prostřednictvím odlišných vlastností. Výsledky tuto premisu potvrdily, neboť kandidáti muži byli častěji vnímáni jako dominantní a kompetentní, což jsou dle teorie typicky mužské vlastnosti. Na rozdíl od kandidátek žen, jež byly více hodnoceny skrze obvyklé ženské charakteristiky, kterými jsou atraktivita a vlídnost. Dále výsledky poukázaly na voličský gender gap, který byl zkoumán prostřednictvím kompetentnosti, jakožto důležité vlastnosti pro působení v politice. Voliči muži označili častěji jako kompetentní kandidáty muže, oproti voličkám ženám, jež vnímaly více jako kompetentní kandidátky ženy.

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on gender as a factor that influences the evaluation of political candidates through experimental studies. The issue of gender candidates is marginal in the Czech political science community. This thesis examines gender through socio-cultural dimensions where one of the crucial theoretical foundations of this approach is the concept of gender stereotypes, which occupies the main framework of similarly oriented studies. The concept of gender stereotyping is closely related to the social role theory, which is the other theoretical base core. Online experiment followed the assumption that candidates-men and candidates-women will be evaluated through different attributes. The results confirmed this premise as candidates-men were often perceived as dominant and competent, which are typically male characteristics. Unlike candidates-women who were evaluated through more usual feminine characteristics such as attractivness and kindness. Furthermore, the results pointed to voters' gender gap that was examined by means of competency as an important quality for working in politics. Voters-men often designated male candidates as more competent, contrary to voters-women who perceived female candidates as more competent.
