Partitive article and the possibilities of translation into Czech

Abstract:

The aim of this master's thesis is to present a complex overview of the French partitive article and demonstrate its possible translations into the Czech language. The first part briefly introduces the category of French determinants focusing on the articles. The second part presents the grammar of the partitive article, its forms, meanings and various possibilities of its usage. A special chapter is devoted to the issues of distinguishing plural forms of the partitive article from the plural forms of the indefinite article. The third part of this thesis analyses the possible translations of the partitive article into the Czech language. For the purposes of such an analysis, a side-by-side comparison of texts by current French authors and their Czech translations was used. Regarding the lexical part of the language, the partitive article can be translated by using the transposition ? by replacing one part of speech by another, for example by an adverb, an adjective or a demonstrative pronoun. Regarding the morphological part of the language, the translation may happen by changing the grammatical number or by different inflection of the noun in question. However, it can be concluded that even though there are various possibilities of the partitive article translation, this article is not translated in the majority of cases.

Le présent mémoire avait pour but de donner une image complexe de l?article partitif et de présenter les possibilités de la traduction en tch?que. Dans la premi?re partie nous présentons bri?vement la catégorie des déterminants français en soulignant les articles. Nous présentons également la grammaire de l?article partitif, ses formes, ses valeurs et son emploi. Un chapitre séparé est consacré ? la problématique de l?homonymie des pluriels de l?article partitif et de l?article indéfini. Ensuite nous analysons les possibilités de la traduction de l?article partitif en tch?que. Cette analyse est faite ? l?aide du corpus crée par le dépouillage des textes littéraires parall?les des auteurs français contemporains et leurs traductions tch?ques. L?article partitif peut ?tre traduit en tch?que dans le domaine lexical ? l?aide de la transposition en remplaçant l?article partitif par un autre esp?ce de mot, p. ex. par un adverbe, par un adjectif ou par un pronom démonstratif, ou dans le domaine morphologique p. ex. par le changement du nombre ou par la déclinaison différente du substantif déterminé. A la fin nous constatons que m?me qu?il existe plusieurs possibilités de la traduction de l?article partitif en tch?que, dans la majorité des cas l?article partitif n?est pas traduit en tch?que.
