Epidemiology of neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system

Abstract:

Neurodegenerativní onemocnění jsou, vzhledem k jejich zvyšujícímu se výskytu a prozatím neexistující kauzální léčbě, problematikou velmi aktuální a závažnou. Kromě Huntingtonovy choroby a familiárních forem Alzheimerovy nemoci, Parkinsonovy nemoci a amyotrofické laterální sklerózy, které mají jasnou genetickou příčinu, není jejich etiologie přesně známá. Předpokládá se multifaktoriální příčina skládající se z interakce genetických faktorů, faktorů životního stylu a faktorů životního prostředí. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá epidemiologií nejčastějších neurodegenerativních onemocnění a je napsána formou literární rešerše, přičemž informace byly získávány z co nejrelevantnější a nejaktuálnější literatury, a to z české i zahraniční, listinné i elektronické. Cílem práce bylo vyhledat a zpracovat informace o vlivu potenciálních rizikových faktorů na vznik vybraných neurodegenerativních onemocnění a zaměřit se na současné možnosti primární prevence. Součástí práce je také základní charakteristika těchto onemocnění včetně kvantifikace jejich výskytu. V diskusi jsou srovnávány závěry jednotlivých studií, které se zabývaly nejčastějšími rizikovými faktory a primární prevencí. Výsledky těchto studií se ukázaly ne vždy konzistentní, což poukazuje na složitost těchto onemocnění. Vzhledem k současnému demografickému vývoji je však naléhavá potřeba tuto problematiku nadále intenzivně zkoumat, jelikož pouze dostatečná znalost rizikových faktorů a možností primární prevence může vést k sestrojení efektivních programů, strategií a doporučení, které jsou klíčem ke snížení výskytu těchto chorob.

Abstract:

Neurodegenerative diseases are due to its increasing presence and yet non-existent causal treatment, relevant and serious problem. Beside familiar forms of Alzheimer and Parkinson disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Huntington disease, all which have genetic cause, others etymology is not exactly known. It is assumed that the cause is multifactorial consisting of interaction of genetic factors, lifestyle factors and environmental factors. This bachelor thesis is focused on epidemiology of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and it is written in form of literal searches, while information was gathered from the most relevant and the most updated literature, in Czech or foreign language and in both paper and electronic form. The purpose of this work was to find and process information about influence of potential risk factors on formation of selected neurodegenerative diseases and with focus on possibilities of primary prevention. One part of the work is dedicated to fundamental characteristics of diseases including quantification of their occurrence. In discussion, there is a comparison of conclusions of several individual studies, which were focused on the most common risk factors and primary prevention. The results of these studies were evaluated as inconsistent, which can be perceived in accordance with complexity of these diseases. In spite of current demographic progression, there is urgent need to intensively research the problematic, because with the knowledge of risk factors and possibilities of their primary prevention, creation of effective programs, strategies and recommendations will be possible and these are the key for decrease in presence of these diseases.
