Armenians in Bulgaria

Abstract:

The topic of master thesis is about Armenian minority which live in Bulgaria; with main focus on the group from Sofia and Plovdiv. Bulgarian Armenians speak west-armenian dialect which in history was spoken in western Armenia and nowadays can be found in eastern Turkey. An integral part of their ethnic identity is the Orthodox religion; many of them are followers of the Armenian Apostolic Orthodox Church. Armenians who live in Bulgaria nowadays are mostly descendants of refugees form Ottoman Empire; mainly from eastern (western Armenia) and western area - surroundings of Istanbul. The reason why these refugees run away was to save their own lives before Ottoman aggressive policy. In 1894-1896, 1915 and 1922, there was a mass genocide of Armenian population in Ottoman Empire and later in Turkey (after the Second World War). The main purpose was to “clean” the countries from non-muslim population. When the Armenians left the country they created some charities to help their people which now work on the international level. The main merit of Armenians is to keep their national identity and language among young generation of Armenian descendants. The aim of the thesis was to introduce the history of Armenians, their arrival to Bulgaria, their subsequent incorporation into the Bulgarian society and social development of the Armenian minority to this day. Part of the thesis is the field research, which I attended in the spring of 2013 in Bulgaria through the program Freemover.

Abstract:

Témou magisterskej diplomovej práce je arménska menšina žijúca v Bulharsku so zameraním na skupiny zo Sofie a Plovdivu. Bulharskí Arméni hovoria západoarménskym nárečím z oblasti územia historického Západného Arménska, ktoré sa nachádza v dnešnom východnom Turecku. Neoddeliteľnou súčasťou ich etnickej identity je pravoslávne náboženstvo, sú prívržencami arménskej apoštolskej pravoslávnej cirkvi. Dnešní Arméni v Bulharsku sú potomkovia utečencov z osmanskej ríše, hlavne z východnej (Západné Arménsko) a západnej oblasti – okolie Istanbulu. Dôvodom ich úteku bola záchrana života pred osmanskou agresívnou politikou. V rokoch 1894–1896, 1915 a 1922 došlo k masovému vyvražďovaniu arménskeho obyvateľstva osmanskej ríše, neskôr Turecka (po Prvej svetovej vojne) s cieľom vyčistiť krajinu od nemoslimského obyvateľstva. Po odchode sa Arméni v cudzine rýchlo zmobilizovali, založili niekoľko charitatívnych organizácií pre pomoc svojim krajanom, ktoré rokmi nabili medzinárodné rozmery. Dodnes väčšina z nich existuje, ale ich podstatou je udržať si národnú identitu, jazyk medzi mladými generáciami arménskych potomkov. Cieľom diplomovej práce bolo predstaviť minulosť bulharských Arménov, ich príchod do dnešného Bulharska, ich následné začlenenie do bulharskej spoločnosti a spoločenský vývoj arménskej menšiny až do dnešných dní. Súčasťou diplomovej práce je terénny výskum, ktorého som sa zúčastnila na jar v roku 2013 v Bulharsku cez program Freemover.
