Real options in energy production

Abstract:

Abstrakt Základním cílem této diplomové práce je představit moderní přístup hodnocení investic, který je založený na teorii reálných opcí. Tato teorie vychází z finančních opcí, kde opce představují právo, nikoliv však povinnost provést v budoucnu určitou transakci za pevně stanovených podmínek. Reálné opce v tomto konceptu představují příležitosti, které můžeme zohlednit při plánování investice. Pro stanovení hodnoty reálné opce se nejčastěji používá binomický nebo Blackův a Scholesův model. Možnost použití reálných opcí je v této práci popsáno na sektoru energetiky, který představuje velmi zajímavé odvětví pro aplikaci reálných opcí. V praktické části jsou přitom na příkladu ocenění pohotovostní flexibility energetických zdrojů porovnány standardní techniky ocenění (NPV) a modely založené na reálných opcích.

Abstract:

Abstract Main purpose of this thesis is introducing modern technique of investment evaluation, which is based on real options theory. This theory is related to financial options, where options represent the right, but not obligation, to make in future some transaction with firmly arranged terms. Real option in this concept represents opportunities, where is possible to take into account planning future investment. For the valuation of real options, the binominal and Black Scholes model are most widely used. In this thesis the possibility of using real options is shown on energetic sector, which represents a very interesting segment for the applications of real options. Practical part of thesis is focused on comparison of standard valuation (NPV) and real options. This comparison is made for power plant valuation.
