Anotace:

Tato disertační práce se soustředí na generaci spisovatelů, která působila ve Velké Británii ve třicátých letech dvacátého století. Dospělý život těchto spisovatelů a jejich převážně pacifistické názory byly výrazně ovlivněny První světovou válkou a také faktem, že byli ve třicátých letech svědky nadcházející bouře, jíž byla další světová válka – a zejména skrz její předehru ve Španělsku. Cílem této práce není historická studie o válce a míru, je jím prozkoumání politických postojů, které vyplývají z literatury faktu a literární fikce vybraných autorů a které jsem označil jako vidiny jednoty. Dále se budu soustředit na cesty k trvalému míru, které daní autoři vykreslují. Mým výchozím a fokálním bodem je autorka, se kterou nejvíce spojuji svoji vlastní zkušenost se světem – Virginia Woolf. V průběhu této práce také obrátím svůj zrak na několik z jejích současníků, kteří se taktéž ve své literatuře snažili představit si lepší svět: Dimitrije Mitrinović, E. M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley a George Orwell. Tato disertační práce se skládá ze dvou částí: nejprve té delší, „Část I: Virginia Woolf“, po které následuje „Část II: Současnící“. V této práci se nenachází žádná samostatná kapitola zasvěcená teorii, protože obecným cílem této práce je extrahování teorie z primárních zdrojů. Externí teorie a akademická učení slouží pouze k objasnění a rozšíření extrahovaných myšlenek. První část práce stanovuje základy celoživotní angažovanosti Virginie Woolf v pacifismu a způsobu, jakým se v jejím psaní odrážel a rozvíjel – hlavně v jejích vizionářských pracích na konci třicátých let, jimiž jsou: Tři guineje – pokračování uznávané eseje Vlastní pokoj, její poslední román Mezi akty, množství kratších esejí a její mnohé svazky dopisů a deníků. Druhá část zkoumá některé její současníky. K Woolfiným vidinám jednoty se zde přidají jejich vidiny sjednocení. Nejprve se druhá kapitola dívá na sloupek Dimitrije Mitrinoviće „World Affairs“ ("Světové záležitosti") který v dvacátých letech vycházel v časopisu The New Age a ve třicátých v New Britain. Dále jsou prozkoumány politické eseje E. M. Forstera sesbírané v knihách Abingerská žeň a Dvakrát hurá pro demokracii. Poté se kapitola soustředí na esej Bertranda Russela Which Way to Peace? (Kterým směrem je mír?) a na závěr se kapitola obrací k radikálním vizím H. G. Wellse v jeho Open Conspiracy: What Are We to do with Our Lives?: Blueprints for a World Revolution (Otevřené spiknutí. Co máme dělat se svými životy? Návrhy pro světovou revoluci), Aldouse Huxleyho v jeho esejích z třicátých let a románu Konec civilizace: aneb Překrásný nový svět a patriotickou esej George Orwella z roku 1941 Lev a jednorožec, které napsal během Bleskové války. Mým cílem není vytvořit shrnutí nejdůležitějších knih a autorů, kteří se zabývají tématem jednoty či sjednocení. Pokusím se sám pro sebe a své současníky zachytit potenciálně cenné příspěvky k tématům světového míru a jednoty lidstva ze zdrojů, které historici, kteří vytváří školní osnovy a píší učebnice dějepisu, tak často nepoužívají.

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the decade of 1930s in Great Britain and the generation of writers whose adult lives and predominantly pacifist views were significantly shaped by the First World War and who lived through the 1930s witnessing the gathering storm of the next great war, particularly through its prelude in Spain. The aim of the dissertation is not a historical study of war and peace, but an examination of the politics of peace in the literary fiction and non-fiction writings, or what I call visions of unity and elsewhere visions of unification, and within them the proposed roads to a lasting peace. Taking for the starting and focal point the author closest to my own experience of the world, Virginia Woolf, in the course of this dissertation I turn my lens also to a number of her contemporaries who likewise attempted to envision a better world in their literature: Dimitrije Mitrinović, E. M. Forster, Bertrand Russell, H. G. Wells, Aldous Huxley and George Orwell. The dissertation is composed of two main parts: the longer, “Part I: Virginia Woolf” and “Part II: The Contemporaries” which serves as something of an organic footnote to the part on Woolf. There is no separate theoretical chapter, as the aim is to extract the theory from the primary sources, while the external theory and scholarship serve only to illuminate and expand the extracted. Part I establishes the foundations of Woolf’s life-long engagement with pacifism and the way it got developed and reflected in her writing, particularly her revolutionary and visionary writings of the late ‘30s – Three Guineas, a book-length sequel to the celebrated A Room of One’s Own and her last novel Between the Acts, a great number of shorter essays, as well as the many volumes of her diaries and letters. Prior to that it traces the evolution of her views from the start of her writerly career. Part II surveys a number of Woolf’s contemporaries to see how Woolf’s views reflect or go against the received opinions. It first looks at Dimitrije Mitrinović’s column „World Affairs“ running in The New Age in the early 1920s and then in New Britain a decade later. Next, it examines the 1930s political essays of E. M. Forster collected in Abinger Harvest and Two Cheers for Democracy, as well as Bertrand Russell's book-length essay Which Way to Peace?. Finally, it focuses on the radical visions of H. G. Wells in his The Open Conspiracy: What Are We to do with Our Lives?: Blueprints for a World Revolution, those of Aldous Huxley in his 1930s essays and his novel Brave New World, and George Orwell’s patriotic 1941 essay The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius written during the Blitz. My goal is not to create a digest of the most important authors and literary works on the topic of unity and/or unification, but to distil for myself and my contemporaries potentially valuable contributions to the ideas of world peace and unity of humanity from the sources where the historians who create school curriculums and history textbooks have been less likely to look for them.
