Dune – Novel and Adaptation and The Eagle Wounded by the Trident

Abstract:

Teoretická část bakalářské práce je věnována srovnání románu Duna (1965) s jeho dvoudílnou filmovou adaptací Duna: Část první (2021) a Duna: Část druhá (2024) z hlediska specifičnosti médií a transmediálních rysů. Práce se zaměřuje na komparativní analýzu způsobu vyprávění a zobrazení světa (fokalizace, kompozice a časová organizace) a na jejím základě podává interpretaci odlišných předpokladů a účinků obou médií, jak se v daných dílech uplatňují. Zabývá se také podobami a účinky hlavních tematických posunů (ekologie, politika a náboženství), jakož i transformací osudu Paula Atreida spolu se spasitelským mýtem do determinističtější podoby a přeměnou Chaniny pasivnější role v aktivní kritický hlas. Praktickou část bakalářské práce tvoří scénář k pilotní epizodě seriálu na pomezí temného sci-fi a fantasy. Příběh se odehrává ve fikčním světě teokratického Kosmického impéria, primárně na těžařské planetě Tungión, jež je dlouhodobě zmítána mezi sférami imperiálního vlivu, snahami o udržení vlastní nezávislosti a hrozící občanskou válkou. Nelítostný boj o moc se nezvratně propíše do osudů bývalé meziplanetární pašeračky Felyry, jejích dvou dětí Luciena a Nárii i vědce Darra, zhrozeného možnostmi zbraně, kterou sám pomáhal stvořit.

Abstract:

The theoretical part of the bachelor’s thesis provides the comparison of the novel Dune (1965) to its two-part film adaptation, Dune: Part One (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), focusing on media specificity and transmedia features. The thesis centers on the comparative analysis of narrative techniques and world-building (focalization, composition, and temporal organization) and, on this basis, provides an interpretation of different affordances and effects of both media as they manifest themselves in the selected works. It also examines the forms and impacts of major thematic shifts (ecology, politics, and religion), as well as the transformation of Paul Atreides’ fate and the messianic myth into a more deterministic form, and the conversion of Chani’s more passive role into an active, critical voice. The practical part of the thesis consists of a screenplay for the pilot episode of a series on the border of dark sci-fi and fantasy. The story is set in a fictional world of a theocratic Cosmic Empire, primarily on the mining planet Tungión, which is caught between the spheres of imperial influence, efforts to maintain independence, and the threat of civil war. This ruthless power struggle irrevocably intertwines with the fates of Felyra, a former interplanetary smuggler; her two children, Lucien and Nária; and the scientist Darro, who is horrified by the potential of a weapon he helped create.
