Lexical cohesion in written discourse

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with lexical cohesion in written discourse. It essentially attempts to explore the relations of meaning that mark the unity within and between sentences; nevertheless, its primary concern is to find out if and how lexical cohesive devices, occurring in written discourse, depend on genre. Fundamentally, the study is based on the model of analysis that enables one to capture all cohesively meaningful lexical relations in a text. To exploit it to the full, two texts are analysed: a research article and a popular magazine article, both covering identical subject matter, but not the same genre. The results of the analyses serve as the basis for a comparison between the two texts, or more exactly, they are used for some better understanding of the functioning of lexical cohesion in texts produced under different conditions and for different purposes.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou lexikální koheze v psaném diskurzu, přičemž se snaží sledovat sémantické vazby zajišťující návaznost dílčích částí psaného textu. Jejím cílem je zjistit, jak se liší kohezivní vztahy ve dvou různých textech, a zároveň poodhalit, do jaké míry lexikální koheze tyto texty ovlivňuje a jaké prostředky k tomu používá. K tomuto účelu je použita analýza, pomocí které lze postihnout všechny lexikálně-kohezivní vztahy ve zkoumaném materiálu, představovaném dvěma tematicky podobnými, nikoliv však žánrově shodnými texty; v prvém případě se jedná o odbornou vědeckou stať, ve druhém o článek z populárně-naučného časopisu. Výsledky analýz jsou použity jako základ pro vzájemné porovnání obou zkoumaných textů s cílem ukázat, jakým způsobem se lexikální koheze v těchto konkrétních textech projevuje.
