We are the music and the music is us: How can the life onlife affect our identities, case study of the Spotify service

Abstract:

Práce je rozdělena na dvě části – teoretickou část a případovou studii. V první části se pokusím definovat současný stav ve kterém žijeme ve vztahu k toku dat a své informační stopě, kterou po sobě hojně chtěně i nechtěně zanecháváme. Na základě textů pěti teoretiků se snažím popsat, jak se společnost vyvíjela do dnešního stylu života, kdy se čím dál hůře dá rozeznat hranice mezi světem online a off-line a my se stáváme ovlivnitelnými díky informacím, které sami dalším stranám poskytujeme a které na síti zastupují naši identitu. Popisuji pojmy jako dataismus, algoritmická kultura nebo Manifest volného přístupu k informacím. Druhou částí je případová studie platformy Spotify. Popisuji, jakým způsobem by mohla měnit naši identitu hudba, jak nám je v aplikaci doporučována a jak pro to mohou využít, případně zneužít informací o naší identitě.

Abstract:

The text is divided in two parts – theoretic part and a case study. In the first part I will try to define contemporary lifestyle in relation to data flow and everyone’s information trace which we are all leaving after ourselves, intentionally or accidentally. Based on works of five theoreticians I try to describe how was the society developing to the contemporary world in which we can harder and harder recognize the border between online and offline and we are becoming easier manipulatable thanks to the information which we provide to other sides. In the text I describe terms as dataism, algorithmic culture or Open Access Manifesto. The second part is the case study of the Spotify platform. I describe how music could theoretically change our identities, how does the process of recommendation works in the app and how it could be possible to use our information or exploit it as well as how actually are the information about our identities gained.
