Aesthetics of Failure: "Glitch Music" and its Pioneers in the Middle of 20th Century

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pojednává o estetice selhání, přesněji tedy o počátcích experimentálního hudebního žánru známého jako „glitch music“. Glitch music, jejíž vznik datujeme do devadesátých let 20. století, je hudba založená na estetice selhání, tento koncept sledujeme již v italském futurismu a poválečných hudebních tendencích. Předkládaná práce si klade za cíl zmapování těchto historických a hudebních kořenů glitch music a současně se primárně zaměřuje na tři z předních průkopníků a výrazných osobností z oblasti „chybové hudby“. Jmenovitě se jedná o Johna Cagea, Pierra Bouleze a Iannise Xenakise.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis deals with the aesthetics of failure, specifically with the beginnings of the experimental music genre known as „glitch music“. Glitch music, which originated approximately in 1990's, is music based on the aesthetics of failure, this concept can be found in the Italian futurisms and post-war musical tendencies. The thesis aims to draw a historical map and musical roots of glitch music and focuses primarily on its most important pioneers - namely John Cage, Pierre Boulez and Iannis Xenakis.
