An Italian-Czech contrastive study of the use of the single dash

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis focuses on the presentation of one of the punctuation marks: a dash. On the one side there is pomlčka (Czech term for the dash) and on the other side lineetta / trattino lungo (Italian term for the dash): two identical characters, yet so different. The aim of the present work is (based on the comparison of the two language systems) to identify its identical and different characteristics. For this purpose, punctuation systems of both languages were first described in general (brief definition, punctuation function and publications dealing with this topic). In the following chapters, attention is paid to the dash itself: its brief characteristics are introduced, various interpretations and the individual uses of the dash are described. Based on the data obtained it was found out that the analysed linguistic systems are different from each other in many ways. The acquired knowledge was then verified in practice: the intention was to analyse the individual translational transitions of the dash from the Czech text into the Italian one. For this purpose, we chose a book entitled «Výchova dívek v Čechách» (1994) [«Bringing Up Girls in Bohemia»] by the contemporary Czech writer Michal Viewegh, which was compared with its translated Italian version by Alessandro Catalano.

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na představení jednoho z interpunkčních znaků: pomlčky. Na jedné straně stojí pomlčka (český jazykový systém) a na straně druhé lineetta / trattino lungo (italský jazykový systém): dva stejné znaky, a přitom tak odlišné. Cílem práce je – na základě porovnání jazykových systémů – identifikovat jejich shodné a odlišné vlastnosti. Pro účely analýzy byly nejprve všeobecně popsány interpunkční systémy obou jazyků (stručná definice, funkce interpunkce, publikace zabývající se tímto tématem). V následujících kapitolách se pozornost uděluje již samotné pomlčce: je uvedena její stručná charakteristika, její různé interpretace a jsou popsány jednotlivé funkce, které pomlčka v daném jazyce zastává. Na základě získaných údajů bylo zjištěno, že se analyzované jazykové systémy v mnohém neshodují. Obdržené poznatky byly poté ověřeny i v praxi: záměrem bylo sledovat jednotlivé translační přechody pomlčky v českém textu do textu italského. K tomuto účelu byla zvolena kniha s titulem «Výchova dívek v Čechách» (1994) od současného českého spisovatele Michala Viewegha, která byla porovnána s jeho přeloženou verzí do jazyka italského od Alessandra Catalana.
