Tradition of the Vandals and the conception vandalism

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá tradicí vandalského kmenu a pojmem „vandalismus“. Na začátku je krátce charakterizováno období styků Vandalů s římskou říší. Těžištěm práce je pohled na prameny 5. a 6. století n. l. a to zejména na Viktora z Vity, Prokopia z Kaisareie, Aurelia Augustina a na annály Chronica minora I – III. Tito křesťanští autoři měli vliv na kritický pohled vůči Vandalům a vytvoření slova vandalismus. Práce se zaměřuje na jednotlivé autory a všímá si jejich názorů a postoje k Vandalům.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the tradition of the Vandals tribe and conception “vandalism”. At the beginning there is shortly described the period of the Vandals dealing with the Roman Empire. The essence of the thesis is a look on the sources of 5th and 6th century, especially on Victor of Vita, Procopius of Caesarea, Augustine of Hippo and annals Cronica minora I – III. These Christian authors had an effect on a critical view towards Vandals and on a creation of the word “vandalism”. The thesis is focused on the particular authors and notices their opinion and the attitude towards Vandals.
