Redescription of Sauropleura scalaris (Lepospondyli: Nectridea) from the Upper Carboniferous of Nýřany, Czech Republic

Abstract:

Nová revize druhu Sauropleura scalaris ze svrchního karbonu (westphal) lokality Nýřany (Česká republika) představuje první detailní anatomický popis lektotypu a odkazovaného materiálu, které byly dříve v literatuře neadekvátně popsány. Poskytnuta je revidovaná diagnóza rodu a druhu, která zahrnuje nově rozpoznaný autapomorfní znak. Tím je receptor postranní čáry vyvinutý na labiální straně dentální kosti spodní čelisti, který je mezi zástupci skupiny Urocordylidae doložen vůbec poprvé. Anatomicky variabilní znaky přítomné v oblasti kraniálního a postkraniálního skeletu mohou být vysvětleny buď změnami v průběhu ontogeneze, nebo vnitrodruhovou variabilitou. Kombinace morfologických a metrických dat byla u druhu Sauropleura scalaris poprvé využita ke zpřesnění hranice mezi jednotlivými ontogenetickými stádii, jejichž definice jsou zde nově navrženy. Mezi nejvýznamnější znaky juvenilních jedinců patří vedle proporčně velkých očnic též voštinovitá skulptura vnějšího povrchu klavikuly, absence kaudálních výběžků frontální kosti a absence vyvinutých kaudolaterálních výběžků zadní části lebky. Velké adultní jedince charakterizují především proporčně malé očnice, dermální skulptura lebky a klavikuly tvořená nahusto uspořádanými jamkami bez rýh, kaudální výběžky kosti frontale, dobře vyvinuté výběžky v kaudolaterální části lebky tvořené kostmi skvamosum, kvadratojugale a kvadratum, a překrývající se hemální oblouky a výrazně sblížené trnové výběžky předních kaudálních obratlů. Subadultní jedinci vykazují kombinaci znaků juvenilních i adultních forem, a tedy přechodný stav mezi oběma stádii. Některé morfologické aspekty postkraniálního skeletu studovaného druhu jsou srovnány se zástupci raných tetrapodů a je diskutován stratigrafický záznam skupiny Urocordylidae ve vztahu k paleogeografii a prostředí.

Abstract:

A new revision of Sauropleura scalaris from the Upper Carboniferous (Westphalian) of the Nýřany (Czech Republic) provides the first detailed anatomical description of the lectotype and referred material, which were previously inadequately described in the literature. Revised diagnosis of the genus and species is provided, including a newly recognized autapomorphic feature. It is the lateral line sulcus observed in labial view on the dentary of lower jaw, which is the first evidence of such a structure in Urocordylidae. Anatomically variable features documented in the cranial and postcranial skeleton may be explained by either, changes during ontogeny, or intraspecific variability. Combinations of morphological and metrical data were used for more precise delimitation of ontogenetic stages in Sauropleura scalaris for the first time. New definitions of these stages are proposed here. Among the most prominent features of juvenile individuals are proportionally large orbits, honeycomb sculpture of the external surface of clavicle, absence of the posterior processes of frontal, and the absence of developed posterolateral processes of the skull. Large adults are primary characterised by proportionally small orbits, dermal sculpture of the skull and clavicle composed of densely arranged pits without grooves, presence of the posterior processes of frontal, well-developed processes in the posterolateral part of the skull composed of squamosal, quadratojugal and quadrate, and overlapped hemal processes and nearly approximated neural spines of the anterior caudal vertebrae. Subadult individuals display combination of the features of juvenile and adult forms, and thus transitional state between the two stages. Some of the morphological aspects of the postcranial skeleton of the species are compared to the early tetrapods, and stratigraphic record of Urocordylidae is discussed in relation to paleogeography and paleoenvironment.
