,,Get liquer away! Critique of Jews as producers and sellers of alcohol in periodicals in the years 1867 - 1918"

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci se zabývám kritikou Židů jako prodejců a výrobců alkoholu v periodickém tisku v letech 1867-1918. V období po prosincové ústavě, která v Rakousku-Uhersku zavedla svobodu vyznání, sílil národnostní boj mezi Čechy a Němci, přičemž Židé stáli uprostřed tohoto konfliktu, a to především kvůli používání němčiny jako hlavního jazyka. Židé byli často terčem různých útoků a projevů antisemitismu, zejména na konci 19. století poté, co byl mladý Žid Leopold Hilsner obviněn z rituální vraždy. Toto obvinění vyvolalo obrovskou vlnu antisemitismu. Vzhledem k možnosti volného obchodu si někteří Židé otevřeli lihovary a obchody s lihovinami, což někteří lidé považovali za škodlivé nebo dokonce až života ohrožující pro tehdejší společnost. Autoři článků začali tyto židovské výrobce a prodejce napadat v různých periodikách.

Abstract:

My bachelor's thesis deals with the criticism of Jews as sellers and producers of alcohol in the periodical press between 1867-1918. In the period after the December Constitution which introduced freedom of religion in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, there was a growing national struggle between Czechs and Germans, with the Jews in the middle, mainly because of the use of German as as the Jews main language. Jews were often the target of various attacks and manifestations of anti-Semitism, especially at the end of the 19th century, after the young jewish man Leopold Hilsner was accused of ritual murder. This accusation sparked a huge wave of anti-Semitism. Given the opportunity for free trade, some Jews opened distilleries and liquor stores, which some people saw as harmful or even life-threating to the society of the time. The authors of various periodicals began to attack these jewish producers and sellers in articles in various periodicals.
