Past and present perceptions towards individuals with mental disabilities

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je chronologicky přiblížit historii přístupu k osobám s mentálním a duševním postižením s důrazem na konkrétní historickou etapu, ve které se jinak velmi moderní a vyspělá lidská civilizace paradoxně chovala k osobám s postižením nepochopitelně necitlivě a nehumánně ve srovnání s dobou počátku vývoje moderního člověka. Po nedávné návštěvě koncentračního tábora v Osvětimi jsem se začala podrobněji zajímat o akci T4, jejíž průběh jsem také zařadila do své bakalářské práce. Práce je rozdělena do tří kapitol. První kapitola je věnována klasifikaci mentálního postižení, dále se zabývá tématem humanizace terminologie a třetí část první kapitoly se zaměřuje na etiologií mentálního postižení. Druhá kapitola bakalářské práce následně popisuje rozdílné postoje a přístupy k lidem s mentálním a jiným druhem postižení během různých etap naší historie. První část druhé kapitoly rozebírá období starověku, navazuje obdobím středověku, následuje etapa humanismu, která se věnuje myšlenkám Jana Amose Komenského. Druhá část druhé kapitoly popisuje období 2. světové války a třetí část této kapitoly se věnuje Hitlerově akci s názvem T4, která bohužel neslavně vstoupila do dějin pro svoji aroganci a pohrdání lidskými životy. Třetí kapitola bakalářské práce popisuje cíl a metodologii využitou ke sběru dat, druhá část této kapitoly je zaměřena na téma inkluze a integrace osob s postižením do současné společnosti a poslední částí třetí kapitoly je pak věnována závěru výzkumného šetření.

Abstract:

The aim of the bachelor thesis is to introduce step-by-step history of the approach towards the people with mental and psychological handicap stressing out a specific historical era, in which an otherwise very modern and developed human society ironically behaved towards the disabled in an incomprehensibly insensitive and inhumane manner in comparison with the initial stages of the modern man evolution. After visiting the concentration camp in Auschwitz and Birkenau, I became engaged in the action T4 the history of which I also included in my thesis. The bachelor thesis comprises of three main chapters. The first chapter is devoted to the classification of mental disability, the matter of terminology humanization, and the third part of the first chapter deals with etiology of mental disability. The second chapter of the bachelor thesis describes different attitudes and approaches to people with mental and other types of disability during various stages of our history. The first part of the second chapter analyzes the ancient times, followed by the middle ages, then the stage of humanism devoted to the philosophy of John Amos Comenius. The second part of the second chapter describes the World War II era in general, while the third part focuses on the Hitler´s T4 project, which infamously entered history for its arrogance and contempt towards human life. The third chapter of the thesis describes the aim and methodology applied to the data collection, the second part of the chapter is aimed on the topic of inclusion and integration of people with disabilities into current society, and the last part of the third chapter is devoted to the conclusions of the research.
