Translating Song Lyrics: A Functionalist Approach. Czech post-National Revival Translations of Folk Songs from Macedonia and Bulgaria

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se skládá z teoretické a praktické části. Úkolem teoretické části je překládání písňových textů vyložit jako translatologický problém. Užívají se přitom nejen poznatky současných teorií překladu (funkcionalistická translatologie), ale i řada teoretických modelů, jako jsou kulturní performance a model ústní formulové kompozice (Parry-Lord). Tyto modely přispívají k vysvětlení principů tvorby písňového textu. Zvláštní pozornost se také věnuje nejen teorii orality, ale i fenoménu lidové poezie po synchronické i diachronické ose jako přechodu písňového textu z orální do písemné kultury. Teoretická část končí vymezením pole výzkumu překládání písňových textů a přehledem funkcionalistických konceptů (skopos, zakázka, intratextové a extratextové faktory apod.) vhodných pro zkoumání v této oblasti. Praktická část je pokusem o aplikaci teoretických poznatků na konkrétní příklady: české poobrozenské překlady lidových písní z oblasti Makedonie a Bulharska, zejména ze Sborníku bratří Miladinovců (1861). Pro analýzu výchozích textů jsou zvolené jak historická perspektiva (autoři a vysílatelé textů, dobový kontext a kulturní specifika výchozího prostředí, recepce textů apod.), tak i vystavbové aspekty (pravopis, prozódie, ustálená spojení) a lexikum. Na cílové texty je pohlíženo pomocí následujících funkcionalistických konceptů: komunikační podnět, skopos, funkce a překladatelské kompetence českých překladatelů (v první řadě Jan Gebauer a Josef Holeček). Z překladatelských strategií je kladen důraz na překládání písňových a kulturních prvků, a na tvořivé překladatelské postupy, jako je změna lyrického já. Práce také zapojuje aspekty recepční a kulturologické. V tomto ohledu zachází do oblasti interkulturní komunikace a národních stereotýpů, a tím se pokouší vysvětlit mimo jiné příčiny slabého ohlasu zkoumaných překladů v českém prostředí. Závěr práce obsahuje nejen shrnutí poznatků, ale i navrh strategií při překládání podobných textů (lidové slovesnosti) v 21. století, a možností zkoumání.

Abstract:

This master thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part deals with the area of song translation, which remains one of the most overlooked branches of translation studies. Although it relies mostly on the functionalist theory of translation and Skopos theory, it also takes into consideration certain theoretical models, such as cultural performance (from the field of performance studies) or Parry-Lord's model of oral-formulaic composition. These models explain the process of creating song texts in various cultures, regardless of the fact that some of them (Parry-Lord) are based on folk epic texts. The functionalist theory of translation is on the other hand used by contempporary studies on song translation as a highly useful approach to addressing extratextual circumstances of song translation, such as skopos, singability, medium of representation, or source/target audience. The practical part of the thesis is an attempt to apply some of the theoretical approaches in form of a case study. It examines the Czech post-National Revival translations of Macedonian and partly Bulgarian folk songs, which were collected and published by Miladinov brothers in Zagreb 1861. The first chapter provides a survey of the source texts, their authors, cultural and political context. The second chapter deals with certain aspects of the source texts, such as prosody, culture-bound vocabulary, orthography of transcription, all of which are perceived as potential translation problems. The next few chapters examine the Czech translations as target texts both from a functionalist (skopos, communication impulse, translators' competences) and a reception point of view (reception of the source texts and their translations in the target culture). The translation strategies employed by Jan Gebauer and Josef Holeček, the most promiment translators of Miladinov song collection, are examined primariyl through the prism of cultural translation and translation of song elements (interjections, for instance). The practical part also pinpoints the question of the lack of reception in the target system. The conclusion is not only a summary of the findings, but it also discusses potential strategies and research opportunities in the area of song translation.
