Gene therapy as a possible treatment for cystic fibrosis

Abstract:

Cystická fibróza (CF) je autozomálně recesivní onemocnění postihující zejména plíce a trávicí systém. Současné léčby CF nejsou dostatečné, neboť se zaměřují zejména na zmírnění symptomů, nebo nejsou univerzálně účinné. Genová terapie nabízí slibnou alternativu k léčbě CF, protože na rozdíl od současných léků umožňuje léčit pacienty se specifickými mutacemi a pacienty, kteří protein zcela postrádají. V této práci popíši a porovnám současný stav a metody využití genové terapie k eradikaci CF a poskytnu náhled do budoucích vyhlídek této léčby.

Abstract:

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting predominantly the lungs and digestive system. Current treatments for CF are not sufficient enough, as they either focus on addressing symptoms or are not universally effective. Gene therapy presents a promising alternative to treat CF because, unlike the current medications, gene therapy offers an opportunity to treat patients with specific mutations or those that lack the protein completely. In this thesis, I will describe and compare the current state and methods of using gene therapy to eradicate CF and provide insight into the future prospects of this treatment.
