Cheap-talk and Conflicts: a Laboratory Experiment

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá konceptem nezávazných tvrzení (dále označovaných jako cheap-talk) a jejich vlivem na modelové situace vykazujících znaky konfliktu, které mohou zahrnovat snahu o koordinaci mezi subjekty. Na základě řízeného experimentu přináší tato práce důkazy, že v těchto případech cheap-talk může zvyšovat efektivitu koordinace. Experiment byl proveden pomocí tzv. strategy metody vyhodnocování s využitím hry sestavené podle schématu lovu na jelena. Má experimentální zjištění jsou unikátní ve způsobu modelování konfliktních situací, kdy zúčastněné strany disponují soukromými informacemi. Lze ovšem říci, že rámcově jsou výsledky v souladu s již existujícími poznatky v experimentální i teoretické literatuře zabývající se cheap-talkem.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the concept of non-binding claims (henceforth labeled as cheap-talk) and their effect on the outcome in situations exhibiting characteristics of conflict which might involve desire for coordination between subjects. Using a controlled experiment, this thesis brings an evidence that the possibility of cheap-talk might increase effectiveness of coordination in such situations. Experiment was conducted using the strategy method of evaluation via game constructed according to stag-hunt schema. My findings are unique in the employed principle of modelling where subjects possess private information. However, it can be said that the results are generally consistent with existing findings in the experimental and theoretical literature on the effect of cheap-talk.
