Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat životopisy Marie Stuartovny napsané třemi autory, kteří se vyhýbají tradičním nábožensky zabarveným pohledům na její život: Stefana Zweiga, rakouského novelisty a životopisce; Nancy Bryssonové Morrisonové, předtavitelky literárního hnutí známého jako "skotská renesance"; a Rethy M. Warnickeové, americké historičky. Práce zkoumá vztahy mezi literárním uměním, historií a dalšími sociálními vědami v životopisech a odhaluje prostředky, kterými jejich autoři dosahují svých cílů. První část práce analyzuje všechny tři biografie, nabízejíc tři rozdílné obrazy Marie Stuartovny. Ve druhé části práce jsou tyto obrazy dále zkoumány spolu s teoretickými přístupy k biografii. Zohledněni jsou i autoři sami, jejich cíle, jejich kulturní či akademické zázemí. Cílem je podpořit tvrzení, že životopis do velké míry reaguje na na sociální a kulturní prostředí ve kterém vzniká a na očekávané čtenářstvo.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyse the work of three writers who managed to escape the traditionally partisan—Catholic or Protestant—interpretation of Mary Stuart’s life which was offered by most her biographers prior to 20th century: Stefan Zweig, an Austrian novelist and biographer; Nancy Brysson Morrison, who is a member of the recent movement known as the “Scottish Renaissance”; and Retha M. Warnicke, an American scholar. It aims to explore the interrelations between literary art, history and other social sciences within biography, revealing the devices their authors use to achieve their aims. The first part of the thesis analyses the three biographies offering three competing images of the Scottish Queen. In the second part these images are further explored alongside the theoretical approaches to biography. The authors, their aims and their cultural or academic background are brought in to support the claim that biography in its form and content is highly responsive to the social and cultural environment of the biographer and its immediate readership.
