Anatomy and morphology of the hind limb of bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera)

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce srovnává myologii bérce a nohy dvou druhů letounů ze dvou čeledí: netopýra velkého (Myotis myotis) z čeledi netopýrovití (Vespertilionidae) a vrápence velkého (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) z čeledi vrápencovití (Rhinolophidae). Tyto dva druhy se liší ve způsobu lokomoce – vrápenec velký, stejně jako ostatní příslušníci čeledi vrápencovití, není schopen kvadrupedního pohybu, ale netopýr velký, podobně jako většina představitelů čeledi netopýrovití, se po pevném podkladu pohybuje obratně. V práci jsou identifikovány a popsány svaly pánevní končetiny zmíněných dvou druhů letounů. Průběh zkoumaných svalů včetně počátků a úponů je fotograficky zdokumentován. Výsledky studie jsou srovnány s literaturou, která obsahuje popis svalů dolní končetiny i u jiných čeledí letounů. V této práci je diskutován vliv průběhu a mohutnosti svalů bérce a nohy na kvadrupední pohyb mnou studovaných a literaturou uváděných čeledí letounů. Tato diplomová práce doplňuje obecné informace dostupné literatury a místy jí oponuje. Na základě poznatků vlastních i těch uváděných literaturou jsou vyvozeny funkční vlastnosti zkoumaných svalů.

Abstract:

This thesis compares the myology of crus and leg of two species of chiropterans from two families: a large mouse-eared bat (Myotis myotis) from the family Vespertilionidae and a greater horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) from the family Rhinolophidae. These two species are different in the type of locomotion – the greater horseshoe bat, in the same way with the other members of family Rhinolophidae, is not able to move quadrupedaly. But the large mouse-eared bat, likewise the majority of family Vespertilionidae, can move dexterously on the solid surface. In the thesis there are identified and described the muscles of pelvic limbs of two species of chiropterans above mentioned. The course of muscles together with the outsets and tentacles are photographically documented. The results of the study are compared with the literature about the muscles of hind limbs of the other chiropteran families. In this thesis there is discussed the influence of the course and robustness of crus and leg muscles on the quadrupedal locomotion of the chiropteran families studied by myself and the families mentioned in the literature. The thesis completes the general information in the literature and sometimes opposes it. On the basis of my own findings and the findings in the literature there are concluded the functional attributes of the examined muscles.
