On-again/off-again relationships in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje zkoumání fenoménu on-again/off-again vztahů ve věku vynořující se dospělosti na české populaci. Cílem bylo zjistit, zda existují nějaké spolehlivé prediktory, ze kterých by se dalo usoudit na to, zda jedinec bude, či nebude participovat v on-off vztazích. V rámci této práce bylo zjišťováno, zda některé z osobnostních charakteristik (citová vazba k partnerovi, destruktivní interpersonální závislost, neuroticismus, extraverze, potřeba kognitivního uzavření, sebevědomí) nebo z charakteristik vztahové minulosti (doba prvního vztahu, počet partnerů) významně predikují výskyt on-off vztahu u jedince. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo 388 respondentů (319 žen). Jednalo se jak o jedince, kteří označili, že již měli on-off vztah (N = 210), a ty, kteří označili, že ho neměli (N = 278). Průměrný věk byl přibližně 23 let pro obě skupiny (SD = 2,1). Na základě výsledků logistické regrese lze konstatovat, že signifikantními prediktory je hlavně úzkostnost citové vazby a doba prvního vztahu. Ostatní prediktory se neukázaly pro zvýšení šance jako signifikantní. Rozdíly mezi pohlavími se prokázaly v typu citové vazby jedinců navazující on-off vztah. Pro ženy se prokázala úzkostnost citové vazby, pro muže nikoliv. Pro obě skupiny pak vyšla jako signifikantní doba prvního vztahu.

Abstract:

The purpose of bachelor thesis is to research on-again/off-again relationship phenomenon at the age of emerging adulthood on the Czech population. The aim was to determine whether there are any reliable predictors to assess whether an individual will or will not participate in an on-off relationship. In this work it was investigated whether some of the personality traits (attachment to a partner, destructive interpersonal dependency, neuroticism, extraversion, need for cognitive closure, self-esteem) and relational characteristics of the past (the duration of the first relationship, the number of partners) significantly predict the occurrence of on-off relationship. The research involved 388 respondents (319 women). These include both the individuals who identified that already had an on-off relationship (N = 210) and those who identified that they did not (N = 278). The average age was about 23 years for both groups (SD = 2.1). Based on the results of logistic regression can be concluded that significant predictors are mainly attachment anxiety and the first relationship duration. The other predictors have not been significantly proven. Differences between the sexes influence the type of attachment in on-off relationship. For women attachment anxiety was confirmed, whereas no attachment anxiety among men was found. The duration of the first relationship was proved to be a significant contributor.
