Forms and changes of the handicraft book binding in the Lands of the Czech Crown from the middle of the 19th century until the end of the First World War

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je věnována vývoji rukodělného knihvazačství v českých zemích mezi lety 1850 až 1918 se zřetelem na uměleckořemeslnou produkci. Na úvod je předestřen základní dějinný vývoj tématu v souvislostech. Dále jsou představeny proměny organizovanosti tuzemské knihvazačské scény i podoby spolupráce s dobovými institucemi a je nastíněn vývoj vzdělávání knihařského dorostu. V ústřední části jsou pak profesně přiblíženi hlavní představitelé domácího knihvazačství sledovaného období spolu s příklady své tvorby. Ve druhé části textu je pozornost věnována technické, praktické a ozdobné stránce knižních vazeb. Dále je upozorněno na příklady častých podob a možných příčin poškození rukodělných vazeb s doplněním některých podnětů k péči o ně. Text v poslední kapitole uzavírá přehled restaurování alba knihvazačských nákresů dílny A. Bydžovský z let 1885-1949. Cílem předkládané práce je upozornit na hodnoty a kvality zdejší novodobé knihvazačské produkce vzniklé po období tak zvaných starých tisků. Text je bohatě doplněn názorným obrazovým doprovodem.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is devoted to the development of handmade bookbinding in the Czech lands between 1850 and 1918, with a view to arts and craft production. At the beginning, the basic historical development of the topic is presented in context. Furthermore, changes in the organization of the domestic bookbinding scene and forms of cooperation with contemporary institutions are presented, and the development of the education of young bookbinding students is outlined. In the central part, the main representatives of domestic bookbinding of the observed period are presented together with examples of their work. In the second part of the text, attention is paid to the technical, practical and decorative aspects of the bookbindings. Furthermore, attention is drawn to examples of frequent forms and possible causes of damage to handmade bookbindings, with the addition of some suggestions for their care. The text in the last chapter includes the process of restoring the album of bookbinder's drawings of the A. Bydžovský's workshop from 1885-1949. The aim of the presented work is to draw attention to the values and qualities of the local modern bookbinding production created after the period of the so-called old prints. The text is richly supplemented with illustrative pictures.
