Chevra Kadisha and Organized Management of Death and Dying under Pandemic Constraints

Abstract:

Opatření spojená s pandemií covid -19 zasáhla do mnoha aspektů každodenního života lidí po celém světě. Mnohé tradice a zvyky musely být v důsledku opatření změněny nebo zcela zrušeny. To se týkalo i rituálů spojených se smrtí a umíráním. Mnohé náboženské komunity musely pozměnit rituály a praktiky spojené s umíráním a smrtí svých členů. Pohřbů se mohlo účastnit jen omezené množství lidí a nabourány byly i zvyky spojené s péčí o pozůstalé. Ve své bakalářské diplomové práci se budu věnovat české organizaci Chevra kadiša a tomu, jak nařízení spojená s pandemií covid-19 ovlivnila její činnost, rituály spojené se smrtí, jež tato organizace vykovává, jak se členové technicky a organizačně vyrovnávali s omezeními jež z nich vyplývala a jak je nastalé komplikace zasáhly v osobní rovině. Organizace funguje na bázi přesných postupů, které vedou k naplnění jejího účelu, jenž souvisí se zvládnutím zásadní etapy života, jakou je smrt. Tyto okolnosti zahrnují praktické nakládání s mrtvými těly, kde hrají roli předpisy o dodržení čistoty, přesného postupu provádění rituálu a péči o zesnulého, které jsou v komunitě řazeny mezi nejzáslužnější pomoc, které se nedostává jakékoli odměny. Další dimenzí je pomoc pozůstalým při zvládání obtížných situací spojených se ztrátou blízkého člověka. Obě dimenze byly narušeny opatřeními spojenými s pandemií. S touto situací se musela vypořádat jak samotná organizace v rámci praktického provozu, tak i jednotliví pracovníci.

Abstract:

The measures associated with the covid -19 pandemic have affected many aspects of the daily lives of people around the world. Many traditions and customs have had to be changed or completely abolished as a result of the measures. This included rituals associated with death and dying. Many religious communities have had to alter rituals and practices associated with the dying and death of their members. Only a limited number of people was allowed to attend funerals, and the customs associated with the care of the bereaved were eroded. In my bachelor thesis I will focus on the Czech organization Chevra Kadisha and how the regulations associated with the covid-19 pandemic affected its activities, the rituals associated with death that the organization practiced, how members technically and organizationally coped with the limitations that resulted, and how the complications affected them on a personal level. The organisation operates on the basis of precise procedures that lead to the fulfilment of its purpose, which is related to coping with a fundamental stage of life such as death. These circumstances include the practical handling of dead bodies, where the regulations of cleanliness, the precise procedure of performing the ritual, and the care of the deceased, which is ranked among the most deserving of assistance in the community, receive no reward. Another dimension is helping the bereaved to cope with the difficult situations associated with the loss of a loved one. Both dimensions have been disrupted by pandemic-related measures. This situation had to be dealt with both by the organisation itself in practical operations and by individual staff members.
