Design and implementation of the Self-service Business Intelligence solution of the consolidated financial controlling

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou self-service business intelligence (SSBI), aplikací SSBI nástroje Microsoft Power BI, teorií finančního controllingu a manažerského účetnictví spolu se základními principy vizualizace kvantitativních informací. Jejím cílem je proto návrh a implementace SSBI konsolidovaného finančního controllingu mezinárodního holdingu IT společností, k jehož naplnění bude využito Microsoft Power BI. Nezbytnými dílčími cíli práce jsou vymezení SSBI technologie a jejích nástrojů spolu s postupem řešení SSBI projektů a také výběr a vizualizace ukazatelů a transakcí klíčových pro finanční reporting prostřednictvím nástroje Microsoft Power BI. K naplnění cíle práce používá metody analýzy, deskripce a syntézy. Výsledkem práce je ověření významu zapojení uživatelů řešení do vývoje, přičemž v případě SSBI řešení význam ještě vzrůstá. Autorka proto doporučuje již před vytvořením úvodní studie projektu poskytnout uživatelům řešení školení, které vysvětlí základní principy business intelligence a ukáže limity i možnosti vybraného SSBI nástroje. Zároveň doporučuje zapojit uživatele do společného vývoje sémantické vrstvy, jelikož se domnívá, že by to mělo vést ke ztrátě ostychu vůči nástroji a osvojení řešení jako vlastního projektu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the matter of self-service business intelligence (SSBI), a desktop application of SSBI instrument Microsoft Power BI, a theory of financial controlling and of managerial accounting along with basic principles of quantitative information visualization. The objective of the thesis is the design and implementation of the consolidated financial controlling of an international holding of IT companies which will be realised by means of the Microsoft Power BI application. The component objectives are the definition of self-service business intelligence technology and its instruments along with the course of action in SSBI projects and also the selection and visualization of indicators and transactions which are key to financial reporting by means of the Microsoft Power BI. The thesis make use of the methods of analysis, description and synthesis. The result of the thesis lies in the verification of the importance of users involvement in the solution development while in case of the SSBI the significance even rises. That is why the author recommends to provide users a training course which explains the basic principles of business intelligence technology and as well shows the limitations and possibilities of a chosen SSBI instrument before the preliminary study of the project. She also suggests to engage users in a common development of the semantic data layer as she supposes it should lead to the loss of inhibitions towards the instrument and to the adoption of the project as of its own.
