Endangerment of Yellow-cheeked gibbon Nomascus gabriellae and its conservation in situ and ex situ

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá biologií, příčinami ohrožení a možnostmi ochrany in situ a ex situ gibona zlatolícého (Nomascus gabriellae) – jednoho ze zástupců čeledi gibonovití Hylobatidae a rodu Nomascus. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species řadí tento druh do skupiny EN – Endangered se stále klesajícími populačními trendy. Vzhledem ke skrytému způsobu života nejsou početní stavy tohoto druhu ve volné přírodě známé, ale WWF odhaduje celkovou populaci zhruba na 900 – 1 000 jedinců v několika volně žijících skupinách ve východní Kambodži, ve Vietnamu a Laosu. Giboni jsou monogamní denní vyšší primáti, kteří obývají ve skupinách vysoká korunová patra stálezelených tropických lesů. Na zem sestupují jen velmi ojediněle. Skupina je tvořena dospělým samcem se samicí a až čtyřmi mláďaty, která rodinu opouštějí po dosažení pohlavní dospělosti. Jedná se o teritoriální druh, kdy každá skupina obývá území přibližně 20–50 ha a své teritorium si vymezuje zpěvem a odháněním cizích jedinců. Ačkoli život vysoko v korunách stromů chrání gibony před pozemními predátory, přesto jsou velmi ohroženi člověkem z důvodu kácení lesů. Bohužel, v oblastech, kde se gibonům zlatolícím daří nejlépe, dochází v posledních letech k velkému odlesňování kvůli intenzivnímu rozvoji zemědělství a nelegální těžbě zlata. Mezi další příčiny úbytku populace se řadí i jejich častý odlov pro maso či využití v tradiční asijské medicíně. Velkým problémem je i v poslední době velmi populární „pet trade“, kvůli kterému musí lovec matku nesoucí mládě zastřelit. Mládě je následně prodáváno jako domácí mazlíček. Na území Asie v současnosti aktivně působí v ochraně volně žijící populace gibona zlatolícího několik organizací. Jedná se o velmi významné instituce, mezi které patří například IUCN či WWF. V poslední době se na ochraně tohoto druhu podílejí i státy, ve kterých se giboni zlatolící přirozeně vyskytují. Ve Vietnamu i v Kambodži vzniklo několik národních parků, které účinně aplikují ochranu gibonů ve volné přírodě, realizují také rehabilitaci a repatriaci jedinců zabavených na černém trhu zpět do volné přírody. Mezi nejvýznamnější patří vietnamské Národní parky Cat Tien a Bu Gia Map, v Kambodži se pak jedná o Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary a Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area. Jedinou nevládní organizací, která se významně podílí na rehabilitaci a reintrodukci, je The Dao Tien Endangered Primate Species Centre (DTEPSC) nebo také The Endangered Asian Species Trust (EAST). Tato organizace byla založena v Národním parku Cat Tien ve Vietnamu v roce 2008 a stará se nejen o gibony, ale i o mnoho dalších ohrožených zvířat a vznikla na základě spolupráce Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre a Pingtung Rescue Centre. Na ochraně ex situ se podílí několik světových zoologických zahrad, ale i privátních organizací. V roce 1987 ve Velké Británii založil Jim Cronin organizaci Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, aby poskytl domov týraným šimpanzům ze španělských pláží, dnes je tato organizace domovem i pro 11 jedinců gibona zlatolícího. Ve světě je aktuálně dle databáze ZIMS chováno 194 jedinců v 58 institucích. V Africe jsou chováni 4 samci a 6 samic, v Asii chovají 33 samců, 21 samic a 15 mláďat neurčeného pohlaví, v Evropě se v zoologických zahradách nachází 53 samců, 34 samic a 9 mláďat neurčeného pohlaví a v severoamerických zoologických zahradách je aktuálně chováno 11 samců a 8 samic. V ČR je v současné době chováno pouze 13 jedinců ve dvou zoologických zahradách - 5 samců a 1 samice v ZOO Jihlava a 2 samci, 3 samice a 2 mláďata s neurčeným pohlavím v ZOO Olomouc. Za posledních 12 měsíců se gibony zlatolící podařilo rozmnoži

t v 5 světových institucích – Hai Park ve městě Kiriat Motzkin (Izrael), Parc Zoologique de Champrépus (Francie), Parc Zoologique de La Palmyre (Francie), Parc Zoologique Et Botanique Mulhouse (Francie) a 2 porody proběhly v ZOO Olomouc. Nejlepší a nejúčinnější metodou pro záchranu gibona zlatolícího se aktuálně jeví pečlivě řízená reintrodukce, která ovšem může být problematická, neboť zvířata musejí být vrácena do míst, která nejsou obývána žádnými jinými skupinami gibonů a zároveň nelze reintrodukovat samostatné jedince. Pro správné vytvoření sociálních vazeb je nutno vypouštět páry nebo malé rodinné skupinky, avšak bylo pozorováno, že ochočení giboni vytvářejí méně stabilní párové vazby, než giboni ve volné přírodě a jejich chování vůči ostatním jedincům je nepředvídatelné, což tvorbu nových párů znesnadňuje. Z tohoto důvodu by instituce, které jsou zapojeny do rehabilitačních programů gibona zlatolícího, měly rozlišovat mezi jedinci, kteří jako mláďata osiřeli a těmi, kteří byli chování jako domácí mazlíčci, protože jejich rehabilitace a péče o ně se může lišit.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the biology, causes of threats and possibilities of in situ and ex situ conservation of the yellow-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae) – one of the representatives of the gibbon family Hylobatidae and the genus Nomascus. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species classifies this species as Endangered (EN) with a decreasing population trend. Due to their elusive lifestyle, the population trends of this species in the wild are not well known, but WWF estimates the total population to be approximately 900-1 000 individuals in several wild groups in eastern Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. Gibbons are monogamous, diurnal, arboreal apes that inhabit high canopy leves of evergreen tropical forests in family groups. They rarely descend to the ground. A group consists of an adult male and female with up to four offspring, which leave the family after reaching sexual maturity. They are a territorial species, with each group occupying an area of approximately 20-50 ha and marking their territory through vocalizations and repelling intruders. Although living high in the tree canopy protects gibbons from ground predators, they are still highly threatened by humans due to deforestation. Unfortunately, in areas where the yellow-cheeked gibbons thrive, there has been significant deforestation in recent years due to intensive agriculture and illegal gold mining. Other causes of population decline include frequent hunting for meat or use in traditional Asian medicine. A major problem in recent years is the highly popular „pet trade“, which involves hunters shooting a mother carrying a young offspring. The young are subsequently sold as pets. However, tamed gibbons form less stable pair bonds, and their behavior towards other individuals is unpredictable, which makes the formation of new pairs difficult. Several organizations are currently actively working to protect the wild populations of the yellow-cheeked gibbon in Asia. These are highly important institutions, including IUCN and WWF, among others. Recently, countries where the yellow-cheeked gibbon is naturally found have also become involved in their protection. In Vietnam and Cambodia, several national parks have been established, effectively implementing gibbon conservation in the wild, as well as rehabilitating and repatriating individuals seized from the black market back to their natural habitats. The most notable national parks include Cat Tien and Bu Gia Map in Vietnam and Phnom Prich Wildlife Sanctuary and Seima Biodiversity Conservation Area in Cambodia. The only non-governmental organization significantly involved in rehabilitation and reintroduction is The Dao Tien Endangered Primate Species Centre (DTEPSC), also known as The Endangered Asian Species Trust (EAST). This organization was founded in Cat Tien National Park in Vietnam in 2008 and cares not only for gibbons, but also for many other endangered animals, established through cooperation between Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre and Pingtung Rescue Centre. Several world zoological gardens and private organizations participate in ex situ conservation. In 1987, Jim Cronin founded the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in the United Kingdom to provide a home for abused chimpanzees from Spanish beaches. Today, this organization is also home to 11 individuals of the yellow-cheeked gibbon species. According to the ZIMS database, there are currently 194 individuals of this species in 58 institutions around the world. In Africa, 4 males and 6 females are kept in captivity, while in Asia, 33 males, 21 females, and 15 gender-unspecified juveniles are held in zoological gardens. Over the past 12 months, yellow-cheeked gibbons have successfully reproduced in 5 institutions: Hai Park in Kiriat Motzkin, Israel; Parc Zoologique de Champrépus, Parc Zoologique de La Palmyre, and Parc Zoologique Et Botanique Mulhouse in France; and 2 births occurred in the Olomouc Zoo. Currently, the most effective and successful method for the conservation of the yellow-cheeked gibbon appears to be carefully managed reintroduction. However, this can be problematic, as the animals must be returned to areas that are not inhabited by any other groups of gibbons, and it is not possible to reintroduce individual animals. To establish proper social bonds, pairs or small family groups must be released, but it has been observed that captive gibbons form less stable pair bonds than those in the wild, and their behavior towards other individuals is unpredictable, making it difficult to form new pairs. For this reason, institutions involved in the rehabilitation of yellow-cheeked gibbons should distinguish between individuals that were orphaned as infants and those that were kept as pets, as their rehabilitation and care may differ.
