Summer camps by the Krtek foundation as a tool for resocialization of former child oncology patients

Abstract:

Onkologické onemocnění u dětí představuje mnohé výzvy nejen během léčby, ale také po léčbě, kdy se klíčovým aspektem zotavení stává resocializace. Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zjistit, jak pacienti vnímají resocializaci po léčbě, jaké problémy v tomto procesu vznikají, a pokusit se pochopit, jakou roli v něm hrají letní tábory NFDO Krtek. Pro účely výzkumu byly použity kvalitativní rozhovory, které byly později analyzovány pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy a zkoumaly, jak bývalí pacienti vnímali tyto tábory jako součást jejich procesu resocializace. Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že tyto letní tábory nabízejí podpůrné prostředí, které dává bývalým dětským onkologickým pacientům možnost si znovu vybudovat sociální dovednosti, navázat nová přátelství, získat sebejistoti po léčbě a celkově usnadnit návrat do běžného života.

Abstract:

Childhood cancer presents significant challenges not only during treatment but also in the post-treatment phase, when the children’s resocialization becomes a key aspect of recovery. The goal of this research was to see how patients view resocialization after treatment, what are some of the problems that arise in that process, and try to understand what role do summer camps by the Krtek foundation play in this process. Qualitative interviews were used for the sake of research and later analyzed using the Interpretative phenomenological analysis to explore the camps as a tool for facilitating resocialization. Findings of the research suggest that these summer camps offer a supportive environment, that gives past pediatric cancer patients the chance to rebuild social skills, establish new friendships, and gain a sense of normalcy and confidence after treatment.
