Size structure of benthic invertebrates in gravel-bed river: spatio-temporal pattern

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zpracovat vzorky makrozoobentosu odebrané na řece Bečvě v roce 2005 a srovnat habitaty a termíny odběrů z hlediska zastoupení trofických strategií, velikostních kategorií a modelových taxonů. Dále bylo cílem determinovat bentické bezobratlé na úroveň, na které bude možné přiřadit základní typy ekologických charakteristik (potravní strategie, velikostní kategorie) a vyvinout metodiku pro nedestruktivní odhad biomasy pro vybrané skupiny vymezené na základě podobného tvaru těla (morfoskupiny). Na základě doposud vyhodnocených dat byly pro tento účel zvoleny 4 typy habitatů (peřeje, tůně, příbřežní zóny a boční ramena). Pro každý habitat byly zpracovány 3 replikované vzorky na jeden odběrový termín. Odběrové schéma čtyři habitaty, vždy po třech opakováních bylo hodnoceno v zimním, jarním a letním termínu vzorkování. Pro hodnocení vztahů k sezónně proměnlivým parametrům prostředí byly k dispozici časové řady průtoku a teploty vody. Během odběrů byly také změřeny základní parametry odběrových míst. Získaná data byla vyhodnocena statistickými metodami s grafickými znázorněními, vyhodnocení vztahů mezi studovanými objekty bylo uskutečněno pomocí analýzy shluků, Kruskal Wallis testem a Mann-Whitney U testem. Plocha těla byla změřena 14332 determinovaným jedincům pomocí speciálního programu NIS Elements AR. V této práci bylo zpracováno 36 vzorků makrozoobentosu, byla prokázána přítomnost 33 taxonů, z nichž nejpočetnější byla skupina vodních máloštětinatců Oligochaeta a čeleď Chironomidae, následovaly řády Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera a Coleoptera. V nízkých abundancích byl zaznamenán podkmen Crustacea, podtřída Hirudinida, řády Diptera (bez Chironomidae) a Megaloptera, kmen Mollusca a podsekce Hydrachnellae (také Hydracarina). Pro čtyři vybrané taxony byla vyhodnocena plocha těla jako vhodný parametr pro odhad biomasy u vodních bezobratlých, který je schopen nahradit nebo doplnit často měřenou tělesnou délku. Tato práce je součástí komplexního výzkumu prováděného v rámci mezinárodního projektu EURO-LIMPACS (GOCE-CT-2003-505540), který byl zaměřen na studium potenciálních vlivů klimatických změn na sladkovodní ekosystémy. Práce přispěje k poznání kvantitativních charakteristik, funkční struktury, distribuce a sezónní dynamiky společenstva makrozoobentosu.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to analyse the samples of benthic macroinvertebrates which were taken from the river Bečva in 2005, and to compare the individual habitats where the samples were collected, and the dates of sampling in terms of trophic community structures, size structures, and model taxa. Another aim was to determine a group of benthic invertebrates which can be classified according to biological and ecological traits (e.i. feeding strategies and size), and to develop a methodology of nondestructive estimating of the biomass of certain groups of invertebrates which are characterized by a similar body shape (morpho-groups). According to the data which had been assessed so far, four habitats (e.i. riffles, pools, marginal zones and side arms) were chosen for the research. Three samples, collected on the same date but at different sampling spots, were analysed for each of the habitats. This pattern of sampling was carried out in the winter, spring and in the summer. The long-term figures of the flow rate and the water temperature of the river were available so that the relations between the samples and the variable characteristics of the habitat could be assessed. The basic parameters of the water sampling spots were measured at the time of the sampling. The data collected were analysed by means of the statistical programs Statistica, PC-ORD a SPSS with graphical representation. The relationships between the objects which were examined were evaluated by the cluster analysis, the Kruskal-Wallis test and the Mann-Whitney U test. The areas of the body surface of 14332 selected specimens were measured by means of the NIS Elements AR program. Thirty-six samples of macroinvertebrates were analysed during the case study. The presence of thirty-three taxa was proved. The Oligochaeta and Chironomidae turned out to be the most numerous groups, followed by Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera. In contrast, Crustacea, Hirudinida, Diptera (except for the Chironomidae family), Megaloptera, Mollusca and Hydrachnellae were represented by a low number of specimens. The area of the body surface was determined as a suitable way of estimating of the biomass of the macroinvertebrates with four taxa. It can replace or supplement the function of the frequent body length measurement. This case study is a part of the European-scale research which is conducted within the international EURO-LIMPACS project (GOCE-CT-2003-505540). The project has focused on the examination of the possible impact of climatic changes on the freshwater ecosystems. This study will contribute to the knowledge of the quantitative features, functional structure, distribution and seasonal dynamics of river macroinvertebrates.
