Roma woman: changes and development of status and roles during a life course in a traditional Roma culture

Abstract:

Tato práce analyzuje, jakým způsobem je prezentovaná romská žena v romistické literatuře, která je ponejvíce výtvorem odborné ne-romské veřejnosti v kontrastu se sebepojetím, prezentovaným v literatuře psané ženami-Romkami. Zaměřuje se zejména na sledování proměny statusu a rolí romské ženy v romské kultuře. Teoretická část vymezuje pojem „tradiční romská kultura“, seznamuje čtenáře s historií Romů, re-konstrukcí paměti národa a vymezením pojmů „status“ a „role“. Vysvětluje také rozdíl mezi emickou a etickou historií. Empirická část analyzuje texty psané romistkami a texty psané ženami-Romkami, ve kterých nalézá obraz „tradiční romské ženy“. Ten je rozdělen podle životních etap a je na něm sledován vývoj statusu a rolí romských žen. Texty romistek a Romek se většinou shodují , avšak v některých oblastech také rozcházejí. Na tyto shody a rozpory je upozorněno. Tento výsledný obraz je porovnán s „tradiční romskou ženou“ tak, jak ji prezentuje stálá expozice Muzea romské kultury, které je jedinou institucí svého druhu v České republice. Výzkum v Muzeu romské kultury ukázal, že identita „tradiční romské ženy“ je zde skryta za kolektivní identitu národní. Práce se snaží o vytvoření komplexního popisu vývoje statusu a rolí „tradiční romské ženy“ v průběhu životních etap a tím napomoci k lepšímu pochopení problematiky života v „tradiční romské kultuře“.

Abstract:

This work will analyze the way in which Roma women are presented in Romani literature, focusing mainly on tracing the changes in the status and roles of Romani women in Romani culture. The theoretical part will define the concept of "traditional Romani culture," introducing to the readers the history of the Romani, reconstructing the national recollection and defining the concepts of "status" and "roles." This work will also explain the differences between emic and etic history. The empirical part will analyze written texts from Romani and Romani women. This is split into different periods and traces the progression of the status and roles of Romani women. Romani texts generally conform with each other, however in some areas they differ. These agreements and disputes are coming to the notice of people. The resulting picture is compared with "traditional Romani women," like how they are presented in the Museum of Romani Culture, which is the only institution of its kind in the Czech Republic. Research in the Museum of Romani Culture has shown that the identity of "traditional Romani women" is hidden from the collective national identity. This work will endeavor to form a complex description of the progression of status and roles of "traditional Romani women," running through different periods to assist in a better understanding of the problems in "traditional Romani culture."
