Epistemological strategies of mathematical platonism

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje možnosti uspokojivé epistemologie matematického platonismu: otázce, jak je možné získat znalost o entitách, které jsou abstraktní a na mysli nezávislé. První část práce se zaměřuje na vymezení platonismu a formulaci epistemologických námitek – představuje námitky Paula Benacerraffa a Hartryho Fielda. Ve druhé části jsou představeny dvě odpovědi na tyto námitky: matematická intuice postulovaná Kurtem Gödelem a tzv. plnokrevný platonismus Marka Balaguera. Obě odpovědi jsou identifikovány na základě otázek: Co je předmětem poznání podle dané teorie? Podávají zastánci této teorie nějaké vysvětlení mechanismu tohoto zdroje znalosti? Jedná se o spolehlivý zdroj znalosti? Práce se zaměřuje na analýzu argumentace obou autorů, přístupy vzájemně srovnává a ukazuje některé jejich slabiny.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with possibility of satisfactory epistemology of mathematical platonism: the question how is it possible to attain a knowledge of abstract and mind-independent entities. The first part of thesis focuses on defining platonism and formulation of epistemological objections by Paul Benacerraf and Hartry Field. In the second part there are presented two responses to these objections: mathematical intuition postulated by Kurt Gödel and full-blooded platonism by Mark Balaguer. Both responses are identified on the basis of these questions: What is subject of knowledge according to this theory? Do the proponents of this theory provide an explanation of mechanism of this source of knowledge? Is it a reliable source of knowledge? The thesis focuses on analysis of argumentation of authors, it compares their approaches and presents some of their weaknesses.
