Gender Issues through the Eyes of Otto Weininger

Abstract:

Záměrem této diplomové práce je vysvětlit genderovou problematiku očima rakouského filozofa Otty Weiningera, který působil ve Vídni na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Práce objasňuje, co ho vedlo k jeho tezím o obou pohlavích, a klade si za cíl nalézt rozlišnosti mezi Weiningerovými pojmy "mužnosti" a "ženskosti". Práce se nejprve zaobírá současným stavem poznání tohoto tématu, druhá kapitola provází úvodem do problematiky, kde základními pojmy jsou například gender či feminismus. Ve třetí kapitole je popsána Weiningerova doba a život. Čtvrtá, předposlední, kapitola práce je věnována detailní analýze jeho zásadního, a zároveň jediného, díla - Pohlaví a charakter (Geschlecht und Charakter).

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to explain gender issues through the eyes of the Austrian philosopher Otto Weininger, who lived in Vienna at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The work explains what led him to his ideas about both sexes and aims to find differences between Weininger's concepts of "masculinity" and "femininity". The work first deals with the current state of knowledge of this topic, the second chapter guides through the introduction to the issue, where the basic concepts are for example gender or feminism. The third chapter describes Weininger's time and life. The fourth, penultimate chapter of the thesis is devoted to a detailed analysis of his fundamental, and at the same time only, work - Sex and Character (Geschlecht und Charakter).
