Gender Differences as Reflected by the Functional Sentence Perspective of the Registers of the News and Academic Prose

Anotace:

V této práci je využita funkční perspektiva větná k nalezení rozdílů v textech napsaných ženskými autory a autory mužskými. K dosažení tohoto cíle bylo vybráno deset akademických společně s deseti novinovými články. Obě skupiny obsahují pět článků napsaných ženskými autory a pět článků napsaných mužskými autory. Prvních patnáct finitních klauzí v každém článku bylo podrobeno cílené analýze na několik vybraných proměnných. Tyto proměnné zahrnují : počet komunikativních jednotek v klauzích, počet a distribuce kontextově zapojených a kontextově nezapojených komunikativních jednotek, počet tematických a rematických komunikativních jednotek, distribuce tematických, tranzitních a rematických komunikativních jednotek, frekvence užití dynamických sémantických škál a dynamické sémantické funkce vykonávané komunikativními jednotkami umístěnými na prvních třech Pozicích v klauzích.

Abstract:

In the present thesis, the theory of functional sentence perspective is used to determine whether there are any differences between texts written by female authors and texts written by male authors. To reach this goal ten academic articles and ten news articles were chosen. In each group of articles, five articles were written by a female author, the other five by a female author. First fifteen finite clauses in each of the articles were analyzed and chosen variables were compared. The variables include: the number of communicate units in the clauses, the number and distribution of context dependent, and context independent communicative units, the number of thematic , and rhematic communicative units, the distribution of thematic, transitional, and rhematic communicative units, the frequency of use of the Q-Scale and the Pr-Scale, and the dynamic semantic functions performed by communicative units placed on the first three Positions in the clauses.
